Conflicting evidence states that John was born at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA, on 13 August 1871. Age 3 at the 1875 NY state census. Schmidt Family bible has a date of 19 August, but entries look like they were all made at once.. He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Jr. and Harriet Maham. John C. Hotchkin

M, (30 October 1847 - 14 January 1930)
John C. Hotchkin was born on 30 October 1847 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.1,2,3 He was the son of Mark Caldwell (M. C.) Hotchkin and Jennette M. Hovey. He married Henriette J. Lock at Holt, Clay County, MO, USA, on 14 February 1872. John C. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Banner Twp, Rush County, KS, USA. The census lists the family as: John Hotchkins, age 38, b NY; wife Henryette, age 31, b IL; dau Clara, age 10, b IL;son Augustus, age 6, b Co; son Alison, age 3, b KS; Census taker had crossed out Little at Ally's name.. He resided at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA, in 1911. He died on 14 January 1930 at Los Angeles County, CA, USA, at age 82.4 He was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park (Pierce Bros.), at Burbank, Los Angeles County, CA, USA. Lot 4449, Sp 2.

John C. Hotchkin’s death certificate said that he was a retired merchant and had lived in California for 20 years. At the time of his death, he lived at 218 S. Elmwood, Burbank, CA. His death was caused by Myocarditis. This certificate cleared up a problem with his mothers maiden name. Earlier records had it as LLovey due to difficulty in reading these records. The proper name is Jennette Hovey. We know that John was with his parents at the 1850 census of Sangerfield, NY and still there at the special 1855 census. He is not found again until the 1880 census of Shawnee Co, KS, where he has a wife and two children. This census says that his oldest child, Gussie was born in Colorado in 1875 so we know that he must have lived somewhere in Colorado, but we have no further information on this location. John is also listed in the 1900 census of St. Joseph, Berrien Co., MI, (78118) with his wife Henrietta and step daughter Clarrisa (Clara). At this census they say that only two of their children are still alive and we know that Clara and Allen were alive after this date; so Augustus or Gussie must have died before this date. John was a witness at the wedding of his sister in Berrien Co, MI in Jan 1898 along with his brother, Robert Henry who was called Robert C. We next find him in Portland, OR from listings in the Portland City Directories. He was there at least in 1911, but the Directories are incomplete so we cannot be sure of the time that he spent in Portland. While in Portland, he lived with his son, Allen H. Hotchkin at 921 E. 40th Street. The Los Angeles City Directory of 1912 has J. C. Hotchkin residing at 627 S. Grand, in the 1914 directory it is John C. at 219 Hamlet, and the 1920 directory has him at 1116 Spence, the home of his son Allen H. Later he lived in Burbank, CA and is buried there in the Valhala Cemetery, beside his wife Henrietta and son Allen. A Deed recorded in Oneida Co, NY in 1894 refers to a wife named Etta but obviously this is Henrietta as we know that they were married before this date and after this date, as they are buried together. The 1920 Census has a Cristian Motor or Mather, age 49, born in Illinois, listed as a daughter, living with John.

The Compiler had searched long and hard to discover what happened to John Jay, without results, until his trip to Oklahoma in 1991. In researching Henry W. Hotchkin's time at Boggy Depot, OK and Hannah Mariah's death at the same place, we stopped in at the Civil War Memorial a little bit north of Atoka, OK and they had a document called "Cemetery Survey of Boggy Depot Cemetery." This survey said that John Jay Hotchkin's gravestone said, "John Jay Hotchkin, son of John and Fanny G. Hotchkin, born in Lenox, MA, Feb'y 5 1826, died at Boggy Depot, August 8 1878."
Boggy Depot was a Commissary point for the Confederates and the site of one of the few Civil War battles in Oklahoma. The Compiler has no information on why John Jay was at Boggy Depot except Dorothy Brose Garlington says that he had joined the Hotchkin missionary group as had his couson Ann. According to Lenox Church records, as copied by R. C. Rockwell, John was baptized on 1 June 1826.4

At Lenox, MA Feb 19 in great peace Rev John Hotchkin, aged 87..3,4 He was buried at Church on the Hill Cemetery, at Lenox, Berkshire County, MA, USA.

Rev. John Hotchkin was very well known in Lenox. He founded the Free Public Library system and was the Head Master of the famous Lenox Academy, 18231847. The Lenox Public Library bears his name and a great deal of material is available on Rev. John and his family in the library files. Both Centennial of the Lenox Academy, and Mallary's, Lenox and the Berkshire Highlands, describe John and his position at the Academy. A History of the Lenox Public Library, by Helen & Mary MacDonald, written on its 100th Anniversary, discusses John's idea, which was then revolutionary, of having books available to all citizens, instead of only those who could afford to buy subscriptions. John's birth and family relationship is described in Talcott and NEHGR, John and his family lived in a house, which is still standing and occupied, at 9 Cliffwood Street, Lenox, MA. The house still looks as it did in an early picture available in the library files. The present owners told the Compiler a story of the large trunks in the attic, still loaded with John's notes and personal possessions when they were viewing the house for purchase. After taking possession they found all of this material missing. John also owned a nearby farm that land records show he sold in August 1853 to Henry Ward Beecher for $4,000. John was admitted to the Congregational Church on the Hill in Lenox on 1 June 1817. His marriage to Miss Fanny Yale on 4 Nov 1823 is recorded in the church records. His death is reported in the Bowman Collection of MA Vital Records: "Hotchkin, John, teacher, born in Guilford, son of Ebenezer and Ruth died 19 Feb 1862 at Lenox, age 671026." The Compiler has a copy of the original death records, Vol 22, p 9. John, his wife Fanny, their two daughters, Mary and Fanny and son Charles Eugene are buried side by side in the cemetery behind the Little Church on the Hill. Their graves are just below the grave of John's brother Ebenezer. The Compiler and his wife, looked most of one rainy afternoon to find the graves as no cemetery layout has survived. The church is a most beautiful church in the typical style of early Congregational Churches. John was admitted to the church on 1 June 1817 according to Lenox Church Records.5,6,7,8,3

According to his obituary in the Prattsburg News, Joseph died on the farm where he was born. This farm originally was purchased by Rev. Beriah and his son, Beriah Jr lived there until he died. Lucretia sold it to James Hotchkin Jr in 1866 but Joseph lived there all his life. It was on this farm that six of Joseph and Desiah's children died of "black diphtheria" in 1864. The children were buried on the farm and a maple tree planted over their graves. There being no money for gravestone, Desiah wrote epitaphs for each child on small gilt-edged cards. These cards are now faded but still readable. A grandchild went to the graves every year with her father to place flowers and hear the story again. After that grandchild moved away from Prattsburg, she realized that in the future no one would know about the childrens graves so she had a stone craved, "the Children of Joseph Beriah and Desiah Dunning Hotchkin-1864". She had quite a time convincing the stone worker that she wanted 1864 on the stone and not 1964. The maple tree died in 1986. Joseph and Desiah are both buried in the Prattsburg Rural Cemetery.

He married Alethea Judson at Presbyterian Church, Greenville, Greene County, NY, USA, on 20 August 1804.3 Joseph Harvey Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1810 at Greenville, Greene County, NY, USA.      Joseph was born in Guilford, CT and moved with his parents to Cornwall, CT and then on to Greenville, NY. Both Joseph and Alithea are buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery, which is accessible by going through a farmer's dooryard. Alithea's gravestone is broken so you can't tell if the name is Alithea or Althea, but Rev Beriah called her Alithea.
