Gloria Joanne Ross 1929-2014
wife of Waalter James Hotchkin
wife of Waalter James Hotchkin
The Mansfield Journal had an article saying that Gloria, home economics teacher at Madison High School was planning on operating the Pure Oil Station as a practice business project.1,2
Gloria Joanne Ross died on 25 July 2014 at Ashland, Ashland County, OH, USA, at age 85. Gloria J. Salyer, 85, went to meet the Lord on July 25, 2014. She was a long-term resident of Kingston in Ashland. In addition to Kingston, Gloria also called Jeromesville, Marietta and Portales, New Mexico, home during her lifetime.
She had a very lively spirit, a quick mind and an incredibly kind heart.
Gloria was born to John C. and Doris Ross on May 9, 1929, in Newcomerstown.
She graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1947 and received her bachelor's degree in special education from The Ohio State University in 1951.
Gloria was a dedicated special education teacher until her retirement in 1987. She was passionate about helping students succeed and gain real-life skills.
After her retirement from teaching, she worked for a number of community service organizations, including The Council for Family and Children serving Ashland County, and Mommies' Friend in Portales, New Mexico; both organizations provided support and education to new mothers. Gloria believed in honoring the Lord by giving to others and service to community.
Gloria was a voracious reader, an avid letter writer and lover of family, friends, cats, cows and NASCAR. She relished a good conversation, a shared cup of coffee with double cream and sugar and watching the cars run the oval, particularly under the Saturday night lights. She also enjoyed tending to her hanging baskets, watching the birds at her many feeders and music -- everything from bagpipes to Willie Nelson to a lively Mexican mariachi tune.
Gloria is survived by three children and three stepchildren, Sylvia (Dale) Warters of Jeromesville, John "Chip" (Karen) Salyer of Glenmont and Rick Salyer of Medina; Mary (Steve Heslep) Stover of Akron, Linda Black of Ashland and Robert Salyer of Ashland; along with seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her son, John W. Salyer, in 1972; and her stepdaughter, Karen Richey, in 2010.
In lieu of flowers, Gloria wishes for those dear to her to make donations or volunteer time to charitable organizations. Some of those dear to hear heart include the Victory Junction Camp, the Humane Society of Ashland County, Hospice of North Central Ohio and the Ashland Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
Private funeral services will be for family at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville. The burial will be in Jeromesville Cemetery.
Due to a family health issue, a memorial-celebration of life gathering will be at a later date for the countless friends Gloria made over the years. (T-G 07/30/14). She was buried at Jeromesville Cemetery, at Jeromesville, Ashland County, OH, USA.
