Albert Augustus Hotchkin was born on 10 January 1840 at Caledonia, Livingston County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Augustus Hotchkin and Adeline Nelson. Albert Augustus Hotchkin was a Private and Reconstruction Aide, andserved in Co 3, 13th NY Infantry, during the Civil War. He married Margaret A. Hughes at Scottsville, Monroe County, NY, USA, in 1863. They were married by Father Donahue..1 He resided at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA, in 1870. Albert Augustus Hotchkin was a Farmer circa 1880. He died on 8 February 1909 at Bath, Steuben County, NY, USA, at age 69.2 He was buried at Bath National Cemetery, at Bath, Steuben County, NY, USA. Sec 1, Row 24, Site 4.
According to Albert's Civil War Pension file, he was wounded in the battle of Manassas on 30 August 1862. The wound was to the ring finger of the left hand, which left this hand with a shortened finger and a permanent disability. The doctor’s report says that the ball passed through the finger shortening the bone by one half inch and the tendons contracted so that the finger could not be straightened. He also served in the 12th PA Cavalry and was taken prisoner at Vicksburg. The Rochester Union Advertiser reports how he describes the horrors of the prison camp at Andersonville, GA. Albert's file says that he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, of dark complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair, and was born on 1 January 1840 in Caledonia, NY.
John Lawless who lived with Albert at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Bath, NY made a statement, dated 28 July 1902 that he had known Albert since 1864 and that they worked together in the house moving business in Rochester, NY from 1865 to 1870. He says that Albert was sober, industrious and a hard working citizen but was now totally disabled. Edward Butler in his statements says Albert was peaceable and hard working but was unable to earn his support by manual labor because of his blindness. Albert made a statement that he had a great toe amputated at the National Military Home in Dayton, Ohio during 1897 or 1898 due to an earlier accident while he was a teamster at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, Milwaukee, WI. He spent most of his life between 1875 and 1900 in various Veterans Homes. Attached is a record of this Veteran care,
On 31 May 1898, Albert answered an inquiry from the Department of the Interior about his family. He answered that he had married Margaret Hughes in the later part of 1863 at Scottsville, Monroe Co., NY. He believed that the marriage records would be with Father Donahue or at the Parish. He said that he had not been married previously and he had one child, a daughter, Elizabeth Luella, who was over 20 years of age. In addition to serving with the NY Volunteers he also served with the 12th Regt. of PA Volunteers in 1863.
Albert A. Hotchkin is listed in the Rochester City Directories for 1871 through 1875. The 1871 and 1872 directories don't give an occupation, but starting in 1875 he is called a driver. He lived for a while at 57 Mt. Hope and later at 4 Hubbell Park, where he and his brother were boarders in the home of their brother, George N. Hotchkin. At the 1872-73 directories, he lived by himself at 2 Alexander St.3,1

He registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IA, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He says that he is 38, born 6 Feb 1880. Native born is marked but crossed out and naturalized checked. England is written and then crossed out. He says that he works for "Uncle Sam" as a rural mail carrier. He gives his wife Frances M. Hotchkin as a dependent.". He died on 15 February 1955 at Masonic Home, Davenport, Scott County, IA, USA, at age 75. Dead at time of his wife's death according to her obituary but his said that she had died 5 years earlier..3 He was buried at Elmwood Saint Joseph Cemetery, at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IA, USA.
The History of Sangamon County, IL says that Albert L. is the only son of Otis and Clara. His age is not given but his parents were married in 1876 and the book was published in 1881.
He is identified as a brother of Dick E. Hotchkin from his brothers obituary.
An article in the Mason City Gazette, dated August 22, 1934 discusses a party by Mrs A. L. Hotchkin and her daughter Margaret held for Margaret's sisters Florence, Marian and Mildred. Florence was leaving to teach her first year at the high school in Sumner, IA; Marian to begin her first year at Upper Iowa college and Mildred was leaving for her first year at Junior College in Independence, KS.
US Emingration records for IA show a Albert Lawrence Hotchkin being admitted as a citizen on 10 Oct 1904 in IA.
The marriage of Albert L. Hotchkin To Frances Wetzel, listed in NE Marriages 1855- 1908 makes it clear that this Albert was the son of Otis S and Clara Hotchkin as both of the parents attended the wedding. Frances' parents are listed as Frank and Anna M. Wetzel.
I now believe that there is only one Albert Lawrence Hotchkin, the son of Otis and Clara. For some , now unknown reason they must have been on a trip to England and back when Albert was born.

Albert Jr. appears in the 1890 Seattle City Directory as a clerk in his father's hardware store at 212 Dexter. It is likely that the family also lived at this location as sister Blanche is listed there as a boarder. In 1891 Albert Jr. is a clerk at Collins Bros and in 1892 he is listed as "removed to Seabeck, WA." Albert and his family operated the general store at Seabeck, WA during a time when Seabeck was expected to be the major port, as opposed to Seattle. After the lumber mill burned across the road from Albert's store, the town disappeared and presently nothing is left except a post office, a very small store and a few homes. The Compiler and his wife Cathy spent a very pleasant day investigating Seabeck and the historical collection regarding the town.
Middle name comes from birth records of his son.

Albert Leet Hotchkin Sr.
Sec 14-3.
The most complete information on Albert comes from the History of Rensselaer County, and the following is quoted from that publication. "Albert L. Hotchkin was the third son of George M. Hotchkin and Harriet Curtis. He received a fair education in early life. In the year 1845 he came to Troy and was for two years a clerk in the drug store of R. L. & G. Drake. His father, possessing only limited means, was unable to render pecuniary assistance to his children, and hence young Hotchkin, at the tender age of twelve years, set out for himself, and unaided and alone, with only a single sixpence in money, reached Troy, there to contend for position with young men of wealthy parentage and trained business ability. Upon the conclusion of his clerkship in the drug store he returned to Columbia County, and worked for three years on a farm. Subsequently he was with W. & L. E. Gurley for a few months, and for two years with the celebrated Dr. Green of New York. Returning to Troy, he spent several years as a clerk in the hat-store of A. P. Barringer, where he became so familiar with the business that, in 1861, he started the hat and cap business for himself in the Harmony Hall block, on River Street. In the year 1861, he married Delia M. Smith, oldest daughter of Leonard Smith, a merchant of furniture in Troy. In the great conflagration of 1862 he lost all of the property that he possessed. With no capital but experience and undaunted resolution, Mr. Hotchkin began again to work out a fortune for himself. For six years he was the general manager of the furniture-house of his father-in-law, whose death in March 1868, necessitated a change in the management of the business, and a co-partnership was formed by Mr. Hotchkin, Geo. D. Smith, and Otis Smith, with the firm name of Smith, Hotchkin and Co. In March 1876, Otis Smith withdrew from the firm, and 1 July 1878, Geo. D. Smith also retired, leaving Mr. Hotchkin, sole owner of the business, which he continues."
Albert was involved in a number of Troy real estate deals. On 18 February 1871 he purchased a property from Charles Stickney, which became the Smith-Hotchkin and Co. Furniture store. On 21 December 1878 he received a property from Chas W. Perkins, Court Referee and between 1885 and 1886 he purchased three additional properties. Albert was a Whig and later a Democrat. For nineteen years, until January 1879, he was Treasurer of the Troy Fire Department, and held various other offices of trust. He represented the 10th Ward in the Common Council of Troy, for the years 1863-66. He was elected fire commissioner, and held that office for six years. In the fall of 1873, he was elected county treasurer, and held the office for three years. He was elected sheriff from 1876 until after 1880. Mr. Hotchkin was a member of the Apollo Lodge, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He served seven years in the 24th Regiment of the National Guard. A City Directory of the city of Troy, NY was located for the year 1860 and Albert Sir was the only Hotchkin shown as living there at that time. He was in the Hats and Cap business located at 288 River Street and living at 609 Douw Street. In 1862 his residence changed to 37 N 2nd Street and in 1863, George M. joined him in Troy and was a city fireman; living at the Northern Hotel. The 1864 Directory says that Albert is a salesman and indicates that he is boarding at the Douw Street address (his wife’s parents home). By 1871 Albert is associated with a furniture company called Smith, Hotchkin & Co., located at 331 River and still boarding at the same Douw Street location. In 1875 the City Directories show Albert as the County Treasurer and Fire Commissioner; plus continuing to operate the furniture making business. By 1878 Albert is listed as Sheriff and his brother George is Dep. Sheriff. Albert is now living at the jail. The next available Directory in 1882 has him working at 329-331 River Street in the furniture manufacturing business with a display advertisement in the Directory, "A. L. Hotchkin, established 1855, Manufacturer and Dealer in all kinds of CABINET FURNITURE, 329 and 331 River Street." At this time he is living at 167 1st Street. Little changes in the next few years, until 1888 and 1889 when Albert is missing from both Directories; however, Albert L. Jr. appears for the first time in the 1889 Directory. Albert and Albert Jr. are back in the 1891-92 Directory with a note for both of them, "removed to Seattle." Albert Sr. appears in the 1890 and 1891 City Directory of Seattle, WA, as a hardware dealer, living at 212 Dexter; and Albert L. Jr. is working for Collins Bros. and living with his parents. The 1892 edition has a notation that Albert Jr has, "removed to Seabeck, WA." Albert's wife Delia M. appears only once in the 1894-95 Directory and daughter Jessie appears in the 1892 edition. Jessie boarded at Thomas St., one block West of Warner and Delia at 120 Roy St.
Albert Sr.'s obituary was published in the Seattle Post Intelligence, and covered four columns including a very good picture of Albert in his Masonic Uniform. This obituary says, "Mr. Hotchkin was born in Chatham, Columbia County, NY, March 8, 1833. His father George M. Hotchkin, settled in Columbia County in 1830 and although a farmer by occupation, held many offices of trust in Chatham." The obituary repeats all of the information in the Rensselaer County biography but adds: "He was a 32nd degree Mason and had lived in Washington for nine years prior to his death. He is survived by his wife Delia, son Albert Jr. and two daughters, Mrs. H. J. Collins of Ballard, WA and Mrs. Walter McFarlane of Cosmopolis, WA." At one point in the article, another daughter, Mrs. Lyman Burke is mentioned; even though it says that two daughters survive him. The Compiler is not positive that he has tied the daughters to the correct husband. The obituary says that Albert Jr has just returned from Rampart, Alaska and that his son-in-law, H. J. Collins is still living there.
The Rensselaer County biography identifies his father as George M. Hotchkin of Chatham, Columbia Co., NY who came to Troy in 1846 and died in 1847 at age fifty-three. It also identifies his grandfather as Geo. M. Hotchkin, a native of Madison Co., NY where he lived during his life.
The records of Seabeck, WA show that Albert L. Hotchkin Sr, on 11 January 1895 was appointed Justice of the Peace, when the elected officer, W. J. Sargent, failed to qualify. Records at Seabeck, WA show that he was Post Master there and owned the local supply store across the road from the lumber mill. He bought the store in 1900 and sold it to Albert Halverson about 1914. In 1886 Seabeck was on its way to being the large shipping port for the northwest when a donkey engine unloading a vessel started a fire and the mill and town totally burned. It never recovered and Seattle became that large shipping port.
In a newspaper article about Nettie and her husband Harry; Albert is described as one of the best know public men in the famous city of collars and cuffs. "Although he was Sheriff and County Treasurer for many years, he was best known as the organizer and Manager of the famous Haymaker Baseball Club."
His middle name Leet that is carried for a number of generations is likely a variation of Leete and is the surname used by Albert's fathers sister Harriet and her husband Harvey Leete or Leet.5,6

Albert T. Hotchkin
M, (10 October 1849 - 28 April 1898)
Albert T. Hotchkin was born on 10 October 1849 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA. He was the son of Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin and Lydia Novill Grant. He married Philena Krum at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, circa 1870. Albert T. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Sullivan County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Albert, age 28, b NY; wife Philena, 28, NY; son Wm M., 1; ED140,S5,L29. He died on 28 April 1898 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, at age 48.1,2 He was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.
Albert's birth and death are recorded in family bible records. The family bible records give a death date of 28 April 1909 and Barber, Sullivan Co. Index of Wills, PG 28 confirms this date; however, his gravestone gives a date of 1898. The Will records would seem to be strong evidence of his death; however, at the 1900 census, he is not with his family so the Compiler is going to use the 1898 date. The 1880 census shows him a 29-year-old farmer, making his birth as 1850/51. Philena had a later marriage to Nicholas Grant and at the 1920 census, Philena Grant and daughter Nellie Hotchkin are living together in Sullivan Co., NY.

Alexander Semple Hotchkin1
M, (11 April 1863 - 19 March 1941)
Alexander S. Hotchkin
We know quite a bit about Alexander and his wife Jennie from various available records. At the 1900 Census, they are living in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; now the Northeast part of Oklahoma. Living nearby were Charles E. Hotchkin and his wife Mary. The History of the State of Oklahoma, published in 1909 says that Alexander was an Indian school teacher for several years and then went to California to work for the US Government at the Mare Island Ship Yards. According to the children’s birth records given in the 1920 Census, their move to California would have been between 1907 and 1910; and their later move to Oregon about 1913. At the 1900 Census he had said that he was an Insurance Agent. The records at O'Hair Funeral Home say that he was an Accountant prior to his death and his daughter Lucy Pearl, in a letter to the Compiler, says that he worked for several Post Offices while in Oklahoma.
At the 1910 Census he is found in two places; he, his wife and children are found at 130 Illinois Street, Valley City, Salano Co., California, which would be the Mare Island area, and he is also listed as a boarder in the home of Silas and Lillian Robinson, Klamath Falls, Oregon. Here, he is described as a clerk at the Indian Agency. At both places he says that he has been married 16 years. At the Valley City location, all his children are listed as living at home and all except Ruth were born in Indian Territory. Ruth was born after arriving in California. Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born after this date in Klamath. His obituary says that he worked in the Indian Agency from 1910 to 1919 when he retired due to ill health. The Compiler has visited the Klamath Indian Agency; about 30 miles north of Klamath Falls, now empty and fenced to protect the historical buildings. It was here that Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born. Alexander and his wife Jennie made their home in Shippington, the lakeshore area of Klamath Falls, where they operated the Cook House for the Klamath Lumber and Box Company. The obituary said that his wife, 6 daughters and one son, three sisters, one brother and 11 grandchildren survived him. City Directories are available for Klamath Falls starting in 1936 and these directories give a further insight into the lives of Alexander's family. In 1936 he and Jennie are living at 2810 Front Street. At the next available directory, 1942-43, Jennie is a widow and operating the Shippington Boarding House by herself. At the 1949-50 directories, Jennie is operating the boarding house with the help of her son William R. Sr.
His widow, Jennie F. 9 Jun 1947, filed the Will of Alexander for probate. This Will listed his children as: Pauline D. Hotchkin, age 51, New York City; Lucy Carson, age 47, Redding, CA; Bessie Petty, age 40, Seattle, WA; Ruth Masters, age 38, Holland, OR; Louise Wood, age 35, Portland, OR; Helen Russel, age 32, Shippington, OR; William Hotchkin, age 49, Shippington, OR. According to the Will, he owned two pieces of real estate; his home, which was on lot 7 & 8 of Shippington Addition in Klamath Falls and 37 acres which was Lot 3 of Sec. 7 in Township 41 South, of Range 5, East of the Willamette Meridian, OR.
A Certificate is recorded in the County Recorders Office, Klamath County that show A. S. Hotchkin appointed as a pastor of the Yainax Indian Mission and entitled to perform marriages. The District Superintendent, Klamath District, and Conference of the Methodist Church of Oregon signed this certificate. The compiler has a copy of this document. Ebenezer Hotchkin Jr., in notes found in the Presbyterian Historical Society, refers to Alex as a preacher and teacher.

Alfred Earl Hotchkin
M, (31 July 1896 - 11 June 1968)
Alfred Earl Hotchkin was born on 31 July 1896 at Wynnewood, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA.1,2 He was the son of Ebenezer Hotchkin DD and Maria Emaline Moore. Alfred Earl Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft on 2 May 1917. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Single and living at 15th and Elm St, Durant, OK". He was Manager in 1920 at Sherman, Grayson County, TX, USA, He operated a Firestone Tire Store. He married Ava Thelma Bennett at OK, USA, in 1921. Their marriage date is according to the 1930 census..3 Alfred Earl Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1930 at Sherman, Grayson County, TX. The census lists the family as: Alfred E. Hotchkin, 33 (1896), married at age 25, born OK, father born OK, mother MO, mgr of tire & rubber Co; wife Thelma, 27 1902), born OK, father born TN, mother born AK; sister Anna, 18 (1911), single, born OK.. He married Joella Oma Brownlee at Denton County, TX, USA, on 13 November 1948. Don Brownlee, dbrownlee@csun.edu.4 Alfred Earl Hotchkin and Joella Oma Brownlee were divorced circa 1960 at TX, USA. He married Susie Ruby Killion at Denton County, TX, on 14 December 1966.4 Alfred Earl Hotchkin died on 11 June 1968 at Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX, USA, at age 71. Death date is confirmed by Funeral Home records. Death is listed in the Antler American newpaper form Antler, OK. Their date given is 13 June 1968. Likely this the newspaper publication date. The newpaper refers to him as A. Earl..5,6 He was buried at Highland Cemetery, at Durant, Bryan County, OK, USA. Lot 33.
According to the 1920-21 Durant City Directory, Earl A. boarded with his parents, at 1501 W. Elm St., and was a teller at the Durant National Bank. Earl and his wife Thelma lived in Sherman, TX, according to the Polk Directory in 1930-31 and he was manager of the local Firestone Service Store. Firestone must have moved him to Ft Worth because from at least 1935 to 1961, according to the Ft. Worth City Directories, he managed and was a salesman with Firestone Auto Supply and Service. His wife Thelma was with him at the 1935 Directory and until at least 1942. At the issue of the 1959 Directory, his wife is indicated as Joella. While living in Ft. Worth, his addresses were; 1935, 3836 Bunting Ave; 1941, 1608 Ashland; and finally in 1959, 4329 Cummings Dr.
Alfred and his wife Joella were among the Hotchkin's that owned property and vacationed at Tin Cup, Colorado. The first transfer is from Cora Belle Luce (formerly Core Belle Nissen) to Alfred E. Hotchkin on 12 July 1955; where she granted Lot 9, Block 32 in Book 335, pg 293. On 6 August 1958, this same person, granted to Alfred, Lot 10, Block 32. In 1966 there is a grant from Joella O. Hotchkin, a single woman, to Alfred of these same lots. This must have been part of the divorce settlement. A year later on 16 November 1967, Book 400, pg 41, Alfred and a new wife, Susie K., both living in Tarrant Co., TX, grant these same lots to Horace M. and Louise D.Lansford. Attending his funeral, according to Holmes Funeral Home records, were sisters, Christine Ryan from Sherman, TX, Mary Stephenson from Antlers, OK, Ann Wainwright from Sherman, and Lil DuLaney From Sherman. Rev Gainer conducted the services in the Holmes Chapel at Ft Worth, TX. Earl is buried in Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK adjacent to his parents and his baby son Alfred Earl Jr. His gravestone says Alfred Earl Hotchkin 7-31-1896 to 6-11-1968. His wife is not buried with him so it is likely that she survived him for some time and remarried. Social Security records confirm his birth date and give death date as June 1968.
Peggy Lou Clark Stephenson agrees that Alfred had three marriages but does not give the surnames exactly as the Compiler found them. Peggy says that Alfred and Thelma had a son who died within a few days of birth. She calls his second wife Jo Ellen and says that they adopted a son, while living in Ft Worth; and after their divorce, he married Sue, who also lived in Ft Worth.

Alfred J. Hotchkin
M, (2 May 1842 - 7 January 1921)
Alfred J. Hotchkin was born on 2 May 1842 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Hotchkin and Jane M. Little. Alfred J. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. The census lists the family as: A. J.,Hotchkin age 28. b NY, Saddlery Mfg., $12000, $3000; wife Cornelia, age 26, b NY.. He married Cornelia Patten at NY, USA, in 1868. Cornelia's orbituary gives their wedding date.. He resided at Frederick County, VA, USA, in 1890. Alfred J. Hotchkin died on 7 January 1921 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, USA, at age 78.2 He was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA. Sec 2, Lot 108.
The Village Directories of Jefferson Co. lists Alfred J. Hotchkin as a boarder in the home of his father, B. F. Hotchkin, 29 Clinton St., Watertown, NY. At the 1870 Census, he is living close to other member of his family in Watertown, with his wife Cornelia. They have no children.
Alfred owned an interest in a Carriage Works in the city of Syracuse, NY and documents at the Onondaga Historical Association tell a story of this enterprise. "A new carriage, boxed for shipment, fell from the wagon of Hotchkin’s & Wilder yesterday, as it was being conveyed to the railroad for shipment. This is the second mishap of that kind that has occurred to the firm within a few days." (Syracuse Std 1 May 1884). Another account from the Syracuse Journal, 23 Sep 1884 tells of the bankruptcy of the firm of Hotchkin & Wilder. "The bankruptcy was due to the death of a Director of Importers and Traders at the National Bank of New York who secured loans for Hotchkin & Wilder." This death stopped the loans needed for operation. A clipping dated, Syracuse Standard 17 Jan 1885, said, "Yesterday, W. B. Clark of Waterloo, assignee of the insolvent estate of Hotchkin & Wilder, was in the city negotiating for the sale of the tools and machinery of the bankrupt, to a proposed new firm of carriage manufacturers, provided a satisfactory arrangement can be made with P. W. Fobes for a lease of the works in Geddes." Hotchkin must have resumed the business later because the Onondaga Historical Association has a picture of a buggy, which appeared in the Herald on 15 Feb 1888, which claims, "The best general purpose wagon, patented 25 January 1887." The files include information on a later business failure. This one is titled, "The Hotchkin Failure," and dated 11 July 1888. It says that, "the assets of Cornelia P. Hotchkin, wife of Alfred J., has been assigned to Hiram W. Plumb for benefit of her creditors." The cause of this failure was a fire that occurred about 9 June. The article claims that there was a total of $34,573.11 of Notes signed by A. J. Hotchkin or Cornelia P. Hotchkin as part of the liabilities, besides 101 employees owed money. The total liabilities, not covered by assets, amounted to $130,936.95. The files also contain a letter dated, 16 July 1890 in which Alfred J. Hotchkin assigns $600.00 of his rights and title to the estate of his mother, Jane M. Hotchkin, to Jane Livingston Armour in exchange for a $500.00 loan. In a letter dated, 9 August 1890, Saratoga Springs, NY, the Note was returned to Cornelia P. Hotchkin in exchange for $500.00.
Alfred is listed in the Syracuse City Directories of 189798 and 189899 as a Commercial Traveler, living at 213 and 215 Green St. His birth and death are recorded in the records of Waterville Cemetery, and he is buried with his wife Cornelia.3,4,5

This death stopped the loans needed for operation.

Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin
M, (18 October 1845 - 16 April 1924)
Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin was born on 18 October 1845 at Caledonia, Livingston County, NY, USA. 1900 census of Meadville Co, Pa gives a date of Oct 1843. He was the son of Augustus Hotchkin and Adeline Nelson. Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin was a Private, andserved in Co I, 13th NY Infantry, during the Civil War. He married Charlotte M. Hotchkin at NY, USA, in 1870. The date is according to the 1900 census.. Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin married Kittie Osborn on 7 October 1895 at Caledonia, Livingston County, NY. This marriage seems very unlikely, but it is clearly announced in the newspaper. There may be an unknown A. M. Hotchkin, but this is also unlikely..
Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Alfred M., Oct, 1843, 56 (age crossed out),married 30 years, born NY, parents born NY, day laborer; Charlotte M., Apr 1840, 60, married 30 years, one child, one living, born NY, parents born NY; son Edward H., Oct 1881, 18, single, born OH, day laborer, parents born OH. Living next door are Nathan C. Heth and wife Elma E. Hotchkin.. He died on 16 April 1924 at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA, at age 78. He died at the County Farm in Woodcock, Crawford Co., PA..2 He was buried at Greendale Cemetery, at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA.
The 1850 census calls him Alfred M. and a newspaper clipping in Caledonia, NY says that he married Kittie Osburn on 7 October 1895. This article called him A.M. Hotchkin and described him as son of Augustus. Alfred was not listed with his family at the 1855 NY state census of Caledonia. Talcott gives his marriage to his cousin Charlotte. The marriage to Kittie Osborn doesn't seem possible based on the 1910 census of Meadville, PA, which says that he and Lotta M. (Charlotte ?) have been married 39 years. He gave his age as 18 and birth at Caledonia, NY on 4 January 1862, when he enlisted in the Civil War. Alfred M. appears in the Rochester City Directories for years 1872 through 1875 as a Laborer. He always resided at the home of his brother George N. Hotchkin. At the 1920 census, he is in Meadville as a boarder with Elmer Brown (likely because George had moved to Meadville.)
Alfred enlisted as a Pvt in Co I, 13th NY Infantry at Rochester, NY and was mustered in on 4 December 1861. His desertion was claimed on 11 August 1862, but he arrived at Camp Distribution, Alexandria, VA on 27 August 1862 and was admitted to Camp Convalescent where he was released on 4 January 1863 and discharged from the service on 9 February 1863. The desertion charge was admitted as an error. His illness was described as TB. An A. Hotchkin, Pri., Co. B, 12th Regt., PA appears in the records of the Andersonville, GA prison camp. These records say that he was in the 4th squad, 5th mess and was transferred to Camp Laughtin, Miller, GA on 11 November 1864.
