Mr. Smith attended Madison, now Colgate University, to prepare for the ministry and he was ordained into the Baptist ministry. He had charges in Central & Western New York, notably Spencer & Hermitage, & Iowa. Mr. Smith enlisted in the Ninth NY Cavalry. Curtis Smith

M, (11 October 1761 - February 1828)
Signature of Curtis Smith from his Revolutionary War Pension Files
Curtis Smith was born on 11 October 1761 at VT, USA. Birth calculated from his 3 Feb 1819 Pension statement where he said that he was age 57 on 11 Oct last year and resided in Murray, Genesee County, NY. He was a Private, andserved in the Capt Thomas Lees Company, Col Warner's Regt of the New Hampshire Line, during the Revolutionary War. Curtis says that he fought in the Battle for Bennington and was taken prisoner by the Indians ant the Burgoyne battle, but escaped. He was discharged at Saratoga, NY in December 1779.. He married Mary Williams at Leicester, Addison County, VT, USA, in April 1786. In another Rev War Widows Pension letter she changes the date to April 1787. They lived in Whiting, VT but she says that they were married in Lusesta, possibily she means Leicester, Addison County, VT. The writing is very unclear and the Compiler can not find such a town as Lusesta. They were married by John Smith, Curtis's brother, a Justice of the Peace.
In a letter to the Pension Board on 22 Feb 1844 she says that she had 15 children of which 7 were alive, she belived at that time. No children were named in this letter. In a 14 June 1820 leter, her husband Curtis Smith, in applying for the Veterans Pension said that his wife was 53 years old and he had 4 children living at home. He named Amasa Smith, age 18, Alvah Smith, age 12 and Electa Smith age 10. He also said that he had a disabled son Shepard Smith, aged 34 at home. Shepard was disabled from having Rickets and could not walk. The Compiler beleived that Shepard is a son from Cutis's first marriage to an unknown woman who died when the children were young.
They were married by Curtis's brother John Smith a Justice of the Peace.
In another letter to the Pension Board late in life, when she lived in Jackson, MI, Mary gives the date as 10 Jun 1766 in Whitney, Rutland County, VT.. Curtis Smith appeared on the census of 1790 at Quennsbury, Washington County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Curtis Smith, 1 free white male, age 16 and up include head of families; 2 free white males under 16; 3 white females include head of families. Next door lives John Smith, 2 free white males include head of families; 2 free white females under age 16; 1 free white females include head of families.. He died in February 1828 at Clarkson, Monroe County, NY, USA, at age 66. Date according to his wife Mary Widow's Rev.War Pension file.. He was buried at Garland Cemetery, at Clarkson, Monroe County, NY, USA.

The relationship in this family and that to the Hotchkin's was found in Curtis's Revolutionary war Pension Applications and that of his widow Mary Williams. This penison file consists of over 130 pages, all quite readable.

Delia M. Smith

F, (1836 - 15 October 1913)
Delia M Smith Hotchkin
with dau Jessie Hotchkin
Delia M. Smith was born in 1836 at Rensselaer County, NY, USA. The 1870 census has her age 30, the 1880 is age 38, and the 1900 age 50. It is unlikely that the 1900 census is correct as that would make her age 11 at her first childs birth. At the 1850 census her age is 14 or born 1836 and she is the oldest of the children.
findagrave.com has birth as 1841. She was the daughter of Leonard Smith and Emeline Derrick. She married Albert Leet Hotchkin Sr. at Troy, Rensselaer County, NY, USA, on 13 February 1861.1 Delia M. Smith appeared on the census of 1910 at Seabeck, Kitsap County, WA, USA. The census lists the family as: Delia Hotchkin, 60 (1849), NY, Widowed; lives next door to son Albert and his family.. She died on 15 October 1913 at Seattle, King County, WA, USA.2 She was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, at Seattle, King County, WA, USA.

Her maiden name came from death records of son Harry H.

Delia was involved in a number of real estate transactions while living in Troy, NY. On 19 April 1875, she was the Grantee of property from Ruth A. Windlow and on 5 May 1877 from Oliver Boutwell. She received two properties in the estate of her mother, Emeline Smith. First on 11 January 1877 and again on 13 February 1879. She had 5 additional purchases in Troy, between Oct, 1886 and September 1888. Delia is listed only once in the Seattle City Directory; the year being 1912, when she is shown as residing at 120 Roy Street.

M, (6 September 1865 - 27 June 1938)
Edgar Almiron Smith was born on 6 September 1865 at Ossian, Livingston County, NY, USA. The Witherell Family of New England, by Witherell & Witherell, Gateway Press, claims that he was born in Ossian, NY but family records say Allagany.2,3 He was the son of James H. Smith and Mary Sanford. He married Catherine Rosena Witherell at Dansville, Steuben County, NY, USA, on 25 April 1891. Marriage date given in obituary..4 Edgar Almiron Smith appeared on the census of 1900 at Pleasant View Twp, Emmet County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Edgar Smith, Sep 1864, 35, born NY, married 9 years; wife Catherine R., Nov 1875, married 9 years, born NY; daughter Elizabeth, Jul 1894, 5, born NY; daughter Edith, Apr 1896, 4, born NY; son Edgar J., Nov 1898, 1, born MI. Living next door to his brother Nathan.. He died on 27 June 1938 at Little Traverse Twp, Emmet County, MI, USA, at age 72. The Compiler holds 3 copies of his grandfathers obituary notices, none of them with a newpapers heading. One said that he died Sunday and two say that he died Monday morning. I believe that it is likely that he diied very early Monday. According to the obituaries, he died after a lingering illnes of several months.Notes from Leroy O. Voorkies in the Sanford Witherell files says that he died of Cancer of the colon. His funeral was held at his home in the Hedrick District of Pleasant View and conducted by Rev. G. A. Weaver and Arthur Pontius..5 He was buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, at Pleasant View Twp, Emmet County, MI, USA. Funeral rites by Rev. G. A. Weaver of Petosky and Rev. Arthur Pontius in charge..

The author doesn't remember much about his grandfather except he was a large man of few words; a real country man who amazed his grand children by eating his peas off from his knife. As soon as the days farming was complete, he ate his dinner and went to bed.
My mother, Margaret Smith Hotchkin always said that my grandfather was born in Alleganey, NY while two published genealogys, Sanford and Witherell give the place as Ossian, Livingston Co, NY.6,1

Edgar James (Jim) Smith

M, (30 November 1898 - 6 January 1977)
James Smith & the Compilers mother Margaret Smith Hotchkin
Edgar James (Jim) Smith was born on 30 November 1898 at Alanson, Emmet County, MI, USA. He was the son of Edgar Almiron Smith and Catherine Rosena Witherell. He married Reva Genevieve Harrison at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI, USA, on 28 September 1917.1 Edgar James (Jim) Smith registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Age 19, born 30 Nov 1899, resides in Harbor Springs, drives auto for F. R. Harrison (The R. is not very clear and may be an error). Has wife Reva G. Smith. His birth date differs from what Compiler had been given.". He appeared on the census of 1920 at Lansing, Ingham County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: James E. Smith, 21, born MI, parents born NY, pipe fitter in auto factory; wife Reva J., 20, no occupation, born MI, father born NY, mother born PA; son Robert J., 1 0/12, born MI; family living with his sister Edith and her husband Orville A. Williams.. He died on 6 January 1977 at Lansing, Ingham County, MI, USA, at age 78. Services were held at the Gorsline Runciman Lansing Chapel with Sgt Major Teresa Spyker of the Salvation Army officiating. Interned at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens according to his obituary. Pallbears were John Smith, Roger Wardell, Mike Shepler, Tom Shepler, Kurt Kessler, and Sidney McDonald.. He was buried at East Lawn Memory Gardens, at Okemos, Ingham County, MI, USA.2

It is possible tht the death year is in error as a letter from Leroy O. Voorkies to Sanford Witherell, dated January 31, 1977 says that James is senile and dying of cancer in a care center in Lansing.

Electa Smith1,2

F, (1805 - 7 February 1873)
     Electa Smith was born in 1805 at NY, USA. In a 14 June 1820 letter to the War Department, her father Curtis Smith, said that she was age 10, which would make her birth about 1809. This would be very young for the birth of her first child in Aug 1824, but not impossible. At her death, her age was given as 67 which would be 1804 to 1805. She was the daughter of Curtis Smith and Mary Williams. She married Ephrain Bigelow at NY circa 1823. This marriage date is not known and the recorded date is based on birth of their first child.. She married Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr. at NY in 1828. Electa Smith appeared on the census of 1860 at Belvidere, Boone County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hochkin, M., 50 (1809), NY, widow; Alvan, 30 (1829), no birth location; Louise, 25 (1834), NY;
House #815 Frank, 23 (1836), NY; Smith, 16 (1843), NY; Henry, 14 (1845), NY; Emma, 13 (1846), NY; James, 11 (1848), no birth location; Rosella, 9 (1850), no birth location.. She died on 7 February 1873 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA. Tombstone says 7 Jan 1873..3 She was buried at North Ridge Cemetery, at Ransomville, Niagara County, NY, USA. Sec 2, Lot 102.

According to the Bigelow Family Genealogy, Electa had a first marriage to Ephraim Bigelow, son of Levi Bigelow and Lucy Sampson. They resided in Clarkson, Genesse Co., NY; which is now in Monroe Co., NY. The Bigelow Genealogy claims that they had two children, these children are Lavisa (Louvisa) and Ransom, raised by Abram Eli as his own and shown in the 1840 and 1850 census as Hotchkin. Electa's obituary was published in the Lockport Daily Journal 28 February 1873: "relict of late Abram Eli Hotchkin, age 67 years, died 7 February 1873." Elsie Hotchkin Moon located her grave in North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria, Niagara Co., NY in Section 2, Lot #102. Her grave differs from her obituary on month of death and gives the date as 7 January 1873. The notice did not say where she died and it seems unusual that it would take so long to publish an obituary for someone who died locally. The gravestone said that she was the wife of Abraham; instead of using Abram, which was the name commonly used by the family. It is possible that Electa was living with one of her children in Belvidere, IL or in Michigan, as she has never been located in the 1870 census. Records on her son Edwin refers to her as Electa Smith, confirming her maiden name which is further confirmed by Polly Smith being in their home at the 1850 MI census.
Niagara Landmarks says that she returned to Newfane, NY in 1860 after the death of her husband 2 years earlier.4,5
