Sally B. Devine
F, (26 July 1812 - 4 December 1899)
Sally B. Devine was born on 26 July 1812 at Divine Corners, Sullivan County, NY, USA.1 She married Richard G. Gardner on 17 December 1835.1 Sally B. Devine died on 4 December 1899 at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, NY, USA, at age 87.
Sally B. Gardner, one of the oldest residents of the town of Fallsburgh, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Simpson, at South Fallsburgh, on Dec. 4, 1899. She was born at Divine's Corners, July 26, 1812, and lived in said town all her life. She was a daughter of Esquire James H. and Mehetabel Divine, one of a family of ten children, one only of whom, Mrs. Huldah Clements, of Toms River, N.J., is now living. In 1835 she became wife of Richard Gardner, a most worthy and upright man, who died in 1875. Of her four children, James D., Elizabeth, Mehetable and Chuvers, but one, Elizabeth, wife of James Simpson, survives her. She was a lady of much more than ordinary intelligence, zealous in her ambition that the very right in things should be done, and being possessed of an amiable disposition, won the love and admiration of the community to which she lived; while consistency, kindness and generosity were among the many virtues that adorned her character. It may be truly said that she was a high type of genuine womanhood. Her consistent life, tempered and guided by a rational and practical piety, furnished an example eminently worthy of emulation, an example of duty done, the obligations of life fulfilled, the pledge, inherent in humanity, redeemed. Her greatest enjoyment seemed to consist in making others happy, -- no unkind expression against anyone falling from her lips. She has seen generations come and generations go, and has ministered to the afflicted and watched at the beside of the sick in almost every household in the section of the country where she dwelt. Whenever sickness or suffering existed in her neighborhood, there Aunt Sally Gardner was found, aiding with willing hands. She was blessed with good health during her long and useful life, and a strong constitution, and it is a consoling fact that the closing days thereof were not passed upon a bed of suffering, but she passed gently and peacefully down the decline, watched with devoted care, and attended by loving hands "until the weary wheel stood still," her spirit passing out upon the wave less surface of time on its mission to the echoless shore. Her memory will be lastingly cherished with affectionate regard.
--- Republican Watchman (Monticello, NY) 5 January 1900.1 She was buried at Fallsburgh Cemetery, at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, NY, USA.
