Heman Hotchkin in an early tin type picture.
The assignment of George and Sarah as parents is based on there living next door at the 1850 Census and Heman naming his first son, George. They are also buried together in the Campbell burying Grounds, Lebanon, Madison Co., NY; further confirming the relationship.
The Madison County real estate records have a number of transactions by Heman: 20 July 1861, Heman and wife sell to Jaliez Billings, CT 369, Heman and Mary H., his wife, of Lebanon; 15 May 1865, Heman and wife to Mason A. Laselle, Bk104, pg380; 12 February 1866, Heman and Mary H., his wife, Bk107, pg180.
Most of Heman's and Mary's children died in Lebanon and their birth and death dates are recorded in the cemetery records. Only the stones for Henry and George M. are still standing in the Hitchcock Family plot. Stones for the children's mother Mary Hitchcock and children Beriah, Mary, Servilia are in a pile against a nearby bush. The Compiler and his wife Cathy had to carefully move each stone to read the inscription. No stone was found for Joseph. From the death dates on the stones, Beriah, Servilia, and Mary died within four days in October 1862. George died after cutting off his toe according to the cemetery records. Also buried with this group is Sarah, wife of Henry, died 3 April 1851, age 75 years and 3 months. Heman is buried in the Cleon Twp Cemetery, Manistee Co., MI where he moved after the death of his 3rd wife and most of his children. We know that Hemam lived in Niagara Co., NY for a while as he is there at the 1870 census. Living with him are his children Otis, Marcia, Ruth, Hattie, and Jay. There is also a 59-year-old female, Emeline, born in NY. Emeline is not indicated as a wife; however, her Will indicates that they were married. The 1869 Directory of Niagara Co. show Heman in Pekin, Cambria, a farmer with 48 1/2 acres on Lot 28, T 14, R.S. At the 1880 census of Lewiston Twp., Niagara Co., he is married to Maria, age 59, born in NY, and both parents born in CT. Living with them is son Jay H. and daughter Marcia. According to the Lockport Daily Journal, the marriage to Marie occurred on 18 December 1875. She was called Mrs. Marie Beebe, so Beebe is not her maiden name.

He was a Rancher and Stockman and lived in Beatty, Klamath Co., OR. His wife's name was Luella Holwe or Hilland, but they were divorced at the time of his death (the records are very hard to read and it is not clear whether they are divorced or she is dead, but she did not attend the funeral). The funeral arrangements and payment were made by his daughter, Mrs Marie Baldwin of San Francisco (Marie is also called Mary in the Will). At this date, she lived at 1275 Bay Street, San Francisco. Hazel's address is given as Whitney, OR. Fred is not mentioned so he may be dead at this date. Funeral records say that Henry had lived in Oregon for twenty five years; making his entry into the state about 1911. These records also say that he was born in Texas, where we have him born in Livingland, Indian Territory. The records give his father as Henry Hotchkin, born in Mississippi (known to not be true) and his mother Mary Semple, born in Ohio. Henry Jr.'s birth in Texas may be true as the family lived along the Red River dividing Oklahoma and Texas and were known to have lived on both sides of the river at various times. She said that he died at Klamath Falls.

Howard Francis Hotchkin
A newspaper article, published in the Washington, NJ, Star-Gazette for 5 April 1990 describes Howard as a radio genius and a man who sold and repaired thousands of television sets. It says that Howard was a native of Denville, NJ whose family moved to Glen Gardner in 1922. He attended High Bridge High School for three months but was forced to quit and go to work because his father died. He took a correspondence course from the National Radio Institute in Wash., DC., which took 2 years and cost $6.00 a month. He remembered that the Newark News carried a full page advertisement showing how to build a crystal radio set and all you had to do was send for the kit. He and his brother, Elmer, sent for the kit and built their first radio in 1926 or 1927. During the great depression, Howard was in the CCC's. Later he opened a radio store in High Bridge and sold Philco, RCA, Commodores radios and refrigerators. During World War II he worked in the iron mine at Mine Hill as an electrician and at General Motors on aircraft radios. After the war, he and his wife Kate opened a small television store on Cornish Street. For a few decades after that, Howard was known by thousands of people around Washington as the only man who could really fix a television set. Retired, he now works in the garden at his mountain home on Mine Hill Road. For a time, he grew his own tobacco and made his own cigars with a machine that he built.4
