     KINGSBURY, CYRUS (1786-1870)

Born in Alstead, New Hampshire, on November 22, 1786, Cyrus Kingsbury is remembered as "the Father of the Missions" in Indian Territory. Reared by an aunt and uncle in Worcester, Massachusetts, he earned a bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1812 and studied at Andover Theological Seminary. Congregational ministers in Ipswich, Massachusetts, ordained him in 1815. His mission field: The Indians. He first served Cherokee in the Southeast, founding Brainerd Mission near Chickamauga, Tennessee, in 1817.

In 1818 his spiritual parentage shifted to the Choctaw of Mississippi. As tribal leaders embraced white culture, he preached and ran churches and schools first for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and then for the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions and Southern Presbyterian Church. Kingsbury founded Elliot Mission for the Choctaws in 1818 and married Sarah B. Varnum that Christmas Eve. He founded Mayhew Mission in 1820 and led expansion of the mission system in Mississippi. Sarah died in 1822, leaving two small sons, Cyrus, Jr., and John Parker; the latter's interests would include editing the Choctaw Intelligencer at Doaksville, in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, in 1850-52. The senior Kingsbury married Electa May in 1824. Accompanying the Choctaw on their removal west, he supervised the founding of Spencer Academy and Armstrong Academy in 1844 and other schools and churches in Indian Territory.

Kingsbury served during momentous events in nineteenth-century Choctaw history. He witnessed land-hungry Mississippians push for the tribe's removal at the 1820 Treaty of Doak's Stand. He persevered through the abolition movement, personally opposing slavery but seeing his mission to preach to all, slave and free, as the higher calling. His stance caught him between his northern religious patrons and slaveholding Choctaws. During the Civil War he suspended his work when virtually every other nonmilitary enterprise stopped in Indian Territory. After the war he resumed his activities. After six decades of service Kingsbury died on June 27, 1870, at age eighty-three, as the lone missionary in the Choctaw Nation.

F, (18 February 1872 - 15 January 1937)
Emma was born at Scotts Mill, Schuyler County, IL, USA, on 18 February 1872.1 She was the daughter of John Kinman and Louisa Katzenberger. She married Charles Huston Hedrick at Scotts Mill, Schuyler County, IL, on 8 January 1891. Emma Hotchkin Obituary gives a 12 Jan 1891 date..2,3 She married William Smith (Will) Hotchkin at Augusta, Hancock County, IL, USA, on 22 January 1896. She is called Emma Hedrick in IL Marriage Index..3 Emma Lucinda Kinman died on 15 January 1937 at Sturgis, Meade County, SD, USA, at age 64.4 She was buried at Bear Butte Cemetery, at Sturgis, Meade County, SD, USA.

Information on her birth and death comes from her son George and her obituary, published in a Sturgis newspaper, dated 21 January 1937. The obituary gives the marriage to her first husband, Charles Hedrick on 12 January 1891. They had two children, Lee and Mabel, before Charles died in 1894. At the time of Emma's death, Lee lived in Winfield, KS and her daughter, believed to be Mabel, or Mae in the obituary, is Mrs Mae Naylor of Billings, MT. The obituary says; "she married William S. Hotchkin in Augusta, IL but does't give the date of their marriage. They moved to Central City, NB where they lived until 1919 when they moved to Sturgis. She is survived by her husband William, six sons, Lee Hedrick of Winfield, KS; Chester Hotchkin of Madison, SD; Emery and George of Detroit, MI; Glen of San Francisco, CA; Wilbur of Sturgis; six daughters, Mrs Mae Naylor and Mrs Lucile Ness of Billings, MT; Mrs Dacel Ness of Union Center, SD; Mrs Iva West of Deadwood, SD; Mrs Evelyn Tarr of Detroit, MI; Mrs Pearl Gorman of Goble, MI; one sister, Mrs Anna Conant of Long Beach, CA; and 28 grandchildren."
On 18 Deember 1916, Emma L. Hotchkin granted Sec. 23, T 7, R 11 to Henry S. Bruck; but the Compiler did not locate the date or method by which she received this property. There is an interesting real estate transaction in the files where a deed was granted by the sheriff based on a high bid, from Emma to her daughter and husband Ivel and Belford Skinner. The files continue to say that this foreclosure occurred from a loan made by daughter Evelyn Tarr and husband Jack to Emma.
Emma was called Emma Lewis in 1916 at the marriage of her daughter Mabel Mae to Albert E. Webb.5

Amanda Lansing Kinnison

F, (11 June 1860 - 16 March 1911)
Amanda Lansing Kinnison was born on 11 June 1860 at Allegan County, MI, USA. Age 10 at the 1870 census of Salem, Allegan County, MI.1 She was the daughter of Lansing W. Kinnison and Lydia St Clair. Amanda Lansing Kinnison married George W. Barr on 12 July 1874 at Claybanks, Oceana County, MI, USA.2 Amanda Lansing Kinnison married Henry Clay McCulick on 3 October 1895 at Home Twp., Mecosta County, MI, USA.2 Amanda Lansing Kinnison died on 16 March 1911 at Trout Lake, Chippewa County, MI, USA, at age 50. Death Certificate calls her Amanda L. McCain and gives her parents, says that she is married but does not give husbands name. Compiler finds no MI Marriage records for a marriage to a McCain. I suspect that the Death Certificate is in error and the surname should be McCulick. There is no informant and the the certificate is filled out by the Registrar of Deaths..1

Marriage records call her husband McCulick while death records call her McCain.
