     William Mead Hotchkin was born on 12 October 1828 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA. He was the son of Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin and Lydia Novill Grant. He married Mariah Smith at Sullivan County, NY, USA, circa 1850. William Mead Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1850 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY. The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin living with parents, 23, farmer. .. He left a will on 7 April 1896 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The Will which was published left nothing to certain family members as his father had left nothing to him.¹ He died in 1899 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY.^2,3 He was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

     In the 1850 census of Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY he is listed as a farmer, age 23, and living with his parents in Liberty. At the 1860 census he is living in Neversink, his age is given as age 31, and occupation as a farmer. Living with him is his sister, Sarah Ann. The 1870 census finds William, age 42, with wife Maria, age 36. Much of this census page is unreadable but it appears that there is a Abner Davis individual, insane age 49, a Tommy Smith, age 14 and a Burt or Bert Hotchkin, age 21. This Hotchkin could be his brother Albert, who was born in October 1849. Audrey Carver says that William and Mariah had no children. The 1872-73 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Sullivan Co. lists him as a farmer with 289 acres in Neversink.

     William was born at Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 29 May 1879. The 1900 census confirms a birth date of May 1879, age 21.. He was the son of Albert T. Hotchkin and Philena Krum. William Mead Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: William Mead Hotchkinis with his mother, brother and sisters.. He married Pearl May Grant at Ferndale, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 3 December 1902. William Mead Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Parksville, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 39, born 29 May 1879. He is a farmer. His nearest relative is his wife Pearl, living in Parksville.". He died on 22 March 1958 at Sullivan County, NY, at age 78. He was buried at Grahamsville Rural Cemetery, at Grahamsville, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

     William Mead Hotchkin Jr. was born on 14 December 1907 at Aden, Sullivan County, NY, USA.^3,4 He was the son of William Mead Hotchkin and Pearl May Grant. He married Edith Sadie Cross at Grahamsville, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 23 January 1932.^5,2,6 William Mead Hotchkin Jr. appeared on the census of 1940 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin Jr, 32 born 1908, carpenter in construction; wife Edith, 29 born 1911; daughter Audrey, 6 born 1934; dau Lois 3 born 1937. Living next door is Edith's parents.. He died on 13 March 1986 at Fairfield, Jefferson County, AL, USA, at age 78.⁷

     William resided in Fairfield, AL near Birmingham at his death and his children still live in this area.

     William Miller Hotchkin was born on 3 April 1883 at Mitchell, Davison County, SD, USA.¹ He was the son of Frank Earnest Hotchkin and Anna (Annie) Mueller. He married Elfrieda Schick at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA, on 9 November 1907.² William Miller Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Miller, age 26, b SD, f & m b IL; wife Elfreda, age 26, b IL, f & m b Ger; son Miller H., age 1 8/12, son Robert F., age 6/12; Miller was a bookbinder and owned his home free of mortage.. He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, in 1910. He died on 24 June 1917 at Avon, Lake County, IL, USA, at age 34. Cemetery is not noted as is that of wife Elfrieda..¹

     William's son Hugh Miller Hotchkin furnished information on this family. He says that both his dad and he were known as Miller. The 1900 census of Chicago finds William M. with his parents and gives his birth as April 1884 and says that he is 16 and born in SD; and he is an apprentice Blacksmith. Son Hugh Miller said that his parents, both lived in the area of Cornell Park, Chicago and met at Robert Fulton Grade School.
     The 1910 census says that they had been married 3 years and that both of their parents were born in IL. Grandson Raymond Harry says that William Miller died of drowning in Chicago. Walter J. gives a date of during WWI, about 1917. William appears in the 1904 through the 1910 Chicago City Directories, as a book binder living at 5141 Winchester until 1910 when he resides at 5528 Oakley. Birth records of his son John have William listed as a Builder.

     William Phelps Hotchkin was born on 18 March 1866 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. He was the son of James Hervey Hotchkin II and Clarissa Jane Phelps. He married Mabel Crawford Culbertson at PA, USA, on 22 June 1892. He resided at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA, in 1892. William Phelps Hotchkin was employed in 1900 as a Construction Metal Worker. He appeared on the census of 1910 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA. The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin, 44 (1865), married first time, 18 years, NY, metal worker, parents born in NY; wife Mabel, 40, married first time, no children, parents born in PA.. He died on 13 January 1935 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, at age 68. He was buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA.

     William was an expert metal worker and fell from a 60 foot high scaffold on March 9, 1903. He was admitted to the Protestant Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, where he stayed until 1908 when he was transferred to an adjoining home for the incurables where he was residing in 1929.
     The 1920 census shows him as a patient at the Hospital of the P. E. Church of Philadelphia. At the 1910 Census of Philadelphia he is listed as age 44 and wife Mabel as age 40.

     William Phillip Hotchkin was born on 9 February 1891 at Newton, Jasper County, IA, USA. Date and location given in his draft registration. He was the son of William Arthur Hotchkin and Mary Ellen Dowling. William Phillip Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft on 5 June 1917 while living at Malcom, Poweshiek County, IA, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives complete birth date and location. He is single and a farmer in Pleasant Twp.". A fortieth wedding anniversary was observed by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Hotchkin on Sunday, April 23, with an open house at St. Mary's Catholic Church hall.

Approximately 145 friends and relatives signed the guest book which was cared for by Mrs. John Harter, a sister-in-law. Guests were greeted by LaRita Hotchkin and John Mortensen, oldest grandchildren. The serving table was decorated by a book shaped cake, baked and decorated by Mrs. Leo Wortman of Newton, a niece.

Lighted candles of ruby in double candelabra were placed on either side of the cake. Mrs. Lee Bullock served the cake. Mrs. Vincent Hotchkin, a sister-in-law and Mrs. Fenton Foster, sister of Mrs. Hotchkin, poured coffee. Mrs. Mary Swart of Spencer, and Mrs. Anna Wortman, sisters of Mrs. Hotchkin presided at the punch bowl. Refreshments of cake, mints, nuts, coffee and ruby punch were served. The mints were made by their daughter, Mrs. Dale Mortensen. Mrs. Alfred Simpson, a niece and Mrs. Rosa Hotchkin, sister-in-law, presided at the gift table.

Mrs. Dora Schultz, Mrs. Elsie Vogt, and Mrs. Mary Baustian, neighbors, were kitchen hostesses. Five grandchildren, Kenneth, Richard and Daniel Mortenson, and Bill and Will Hotchkin gathered trays. Mrs. William Devereux of Adair, sister of Mr. Hotchkin, and Charles T. Hotchkin of Kellogg, brother of Mr. Hotchkin, was bridesmaid and best man at the wedding. Both were present for the open house.

William P. Hotchkin and Elizabeth Harter were married April 20, 1921, at the Catholic Church in Grinnell by the Rev. M. J. Hannon. They farmed until twenty-one years ago when they moved to their present home at 1619- 9th Avenue in Grinnell.

Mr. and Mrs. Hotchkin are the parents of two children, Bernard and Anna Marie Mortensen and twelve grandchildren all living in the Grinnell community. Guests registered from Davenport, Adair, Kellogg, Laurel, Newton, Spencer, Toledo, Malcom and Grinnell.

Hotchkin, 39 (1890), IA, father born in IL, mother in IA, farmer; wife Elizabeth, 31 (1898), born in IA, parents born in Germany; son Bernard E., 8 (1921), born in IA, parents born in IA; Anna M., 3 3/4 (1927, born in IA. He married at age 30, she at age 22.. He died on 10 March 1963 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA, at age 72. He was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.

     William R. Hotchkin was born circa 1870 at Florida, Orange County, NY, USA. He was the son of Samuel Beriah Hotchkin and Sarah Arminda Rogers. William R. Hotchkin died circa 1872 at Florida, Orange County, NY.²

     William Rowland Hotchkin was born on 6 June 1868 at Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, PA, USA.⁴ He was the son of Gurdon Beriah Hotchkin MD and Sarah Jane Cochran. He married Emma Jane Black at Altoona, Blair County, PA, USA, on 19 June 1895.⁵ William Rowland Hotchkin was employed in 1900 as an Advertizing Sales Manager. He appeared on the census of 1900 at Manhattan, New York County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Wm. R., age 32, b 6-1868 in PA,parents born NY, married 5 years, Manager; wife Emma J., age 30, b 8-1869 in PA, parents born PA, married 5 years, 1 child, 1 living; son James R., age 1 yr, 4 mo, b 2-1899 in PA; boarder with Mary F. King.. He resided at New York City, New York County, NY, USA, in 1900. He died on 7 October 1934 at Montclair, Essex County, NJ, USA, at age 66.^4,6 He was buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery, at Montclair, Essex County, NJ, USA.

     William Rowland Hotchkin, writing in NEHGR, Vol 85, gives a lot of information on himself. He says that he was an advertising and merchandising executive for John Wanamaker and Gimbel Brothers in Philadelphia and New York City; general merchandising counsel for retailers; former president of the Sphinx Club, New York City; and author of various books and many articles on merchandising and advertising in trade papers. Four of these books are referenced in the footnotes.

William in his NEHGR report discusses the name changes of the family and documents the Hochkin spelling that the Compiler has further covered in this book. He says that he had in his possession a letter from Rev James Hervey Hotchkin to his grandson, Dr Gurdon Beriah Hotchkin, the letter dated, 19 March, 1849, says, "Our name was originally spelled Hodgkin, my grandfather, Noah, spelt it Hochkin. My father, Rev Beriah inserted the 't' and this is the present spelling in our different branches of the family." William goes on to say that this spelling is confirmed by another original letter that he has in his possession written by Rev Beriah Hotchkin to his son, Rev James Hervey Hotchkin in November, 1813, in which the names, both in address and signature are spelled Hotchkin. This letter is now in the possession of the Presbyterian Historical Society and the Compiler has a copy of it.
     The family is shown as arriving on the ship Oceanic from Cherbourg, France on 6 Jul 1910. William is listed as Wm. Roland, age 40, Emma is Mrs Wm. Roland age 35, James is James Roland, age 12. All are shown as US Citizens.

     William Russell Hotchkin Jr. was born on 17 June 1936 at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, USA. Date on gravestone.¹ He was the son of William Russell Hotchkin Sr. and Sula Frances McLane. William Russell Hotchkin Jr. was a OREGON CPL 245 TANK BN KOREA, andserved. He married Jean Annette Jamieson at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, circa 1955.² William died on 14 April 1967 at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, at age 30. Death Cert #5149.^3,1 He was buried at Eternal Hills Cemetery, at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, USA.

     Wards Funeral Home in Klamath Falls holds funeral records for William R. Jr. These records give a birth date of 10 April 1930 in Klamath Falls, OR. Social Security Records do not confirm this date. The funeral records show that his wife Jean and sons Dwayne and Darrell, all of Klamath Falls, plus sisters Mary Ellen Hankins of Portland and Barbara Jones of Carlsbad, New Mexico, survived him. It is the Compiler understanding that Jean remarried and moved to Alaska with her sons. A relative said in 1993 that Jean had died and one son was still in Alaska and the other was living in the Seattle area.
     William is listed in a number of Klamath City Directories starting with 1949-50. At this time he is a parts-man for Rose Motor Co. and lives at 529 Torrey. In the 1955 Directory, William R. Jr. is married to Jean A. and is a salesman for Parker Pontiac, and lives at 2043 White Ave. By the 1958 City Directory, Jean A. is an employee at the Klamath Chamber of Commerce and William R. Jr. is now a salesman for Eccles Motor Company and they live at 204 Nevada Ave. In the 1959 Directory William R. Jr. has made another job change to the Basin Motors Company. In 1960 Jean is now a bookkeeper for Fred E. Barnett Company of Oregon and William Jr. is still with Basin Motors. The last available Directory for 1961 mentions William Jr. and Jean but does not give a business location for Jean; however, William Jr. is back with Eccles Motors where he worked in 1958.¹

     William Russell Hotchkin Sr. was born on 27 August 1898 at Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA. William is age 11 at the 1910 census.² He was the son of Alexander Semple Hotchkin and Jennie F. Russell. William Russell Hotchkin Sr. was a PFC, andserved in Field Artillery, during the World War I. He married Gladys Willis Jackson at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, USA, on 27 December 1920.³ He married Sula Frances McLane at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, on 12 August 1924.⁴ William Russell Hotchkin Sr. and Sula Frances McLane appeared on the census of 1930 at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR. The census lists the family as: William R. Hotchkin, 31 (1898), married at 25, born OK, parents born in TX, handler in lumber yard; wife Frances M., 25 (1904), married at age 20, born OR, father born OR, mother KS, no occup; daughter Mary E., 5, born OR; daughter Barbara L., age 3 6/12, born OR.. William Russell Hotchkin Sr. and an unknown person were divorced before 1940 at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR. Divorced at the 1940 census.. He resided at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, in 1964. He died on 11 October 1964 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA, at age 66.^5,2 He was buried at Klamath Memorial Park, at Klamath Falls, Klamath County, OR, USA.

     William died in Portland, Oregon at the Veterans Hospital and was taken back to Klamath for burial. Later when his mother died, she was buried next to him. William was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Field Artillery. He enlisted on 6 February 1917 at Vancouver, WA and was discharged on 4 June 1920 at San Francisco. The records of Wards Funeral Home list daughters, Mary Ellen Hankins, of Portland and Barbara Jones of Carlsbad, New Mexico and 7 grand children. His only son, William Jr. was living in Klamath Falls at that time. He also had four living sisters; Bess Petty, Louise Woods, Pauline Hotchkin, Ruth Masters, Lucy Carson, and Helen Russell. It is likely that he was divorced from his wife Frances at this time as no wife is named on the funeral records and when his son died, his mother is listed as Frances Padgett, so probabily she had remarried. Funeral records show that he was born in Durant, Oklahoma and had been a carpenter for most of his life.⁶

     William Samuel Hotchkin was born on 17 June 1843 at Maryland, Otsego County, NY, USA. Age 26 at the 1870 census.² He was the son of Ashley Hotchkin and Christina Haynes. William Samuel Hotchkin was registered for Civil War Draft on on 1 July 1863 at Maryland, Otsego County, NY, USA. Age 20, clerk, unmarried.³ Heserved in Company E, 1st Regt., NY Light Artillery, during the Civil War. He wrote two diaries during his war time service that are now held by the Univ. of Virginia Libary. He served during the capture of Petersburg and Richmond, VA and was in Richmond for some time after the surrender of the city.
A note in one of the diaries says that the diaries were read to the May 19, 1907 Baptist Convention at Washington, DC by his son Charles F. Hotchkin. He married Celida Amanda Wright at Westford, Otsego County, NY, USA, on 24 December 1868.^4,1,5,2,6 William Samuel Hotchkin was a Real Estate Broker in 1880 at Binghamton, Broome County, NY, USA. He appeared on the census of 1890 at Binghamton, Broome County, NY. The census lists the family as: 1890 Veteran Census, Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, SD 9-ED42. He resided at Binghamton, Broome County, NY, in 1890. He died on 8 April 1899 at Binghamton, Broome County, NY, at age 55.^7,8 He was buried at Schenevus Cemetery, at Schenevus, Otsego County, NY, USA.

     William Samuel Hotchkin took his middle name from his grandfather. He was born in Maryland, NY on 17 May 1843 according to calculation from his Death Certificate, which gives his age as 55 years, 10 months, 22 days. This date differs from that given to the Compiler by his granddaughter Ruth Elizabeth Clapper. She furnished a date of 17 June 1843. Several generations of the family lived at a family home at 101 Main Street, Binghamton, NY.
     William enlisted in the Union Army at Schenevus on 29 August 1864 as a Pvt and Artificer in Co. E, 1st Regt NY Engineers. (The dictionary describes an Artificer as a soldier mechanic who does repairs.) He served until 30 June 1865 and was discharged at Richmond, VA. His pension application says that he suffered from rheumatism, which specially affected the right shoulder and arm. His application was never completed and was abandoned at a later date. The enlistment documents described William as age 21, 5 feet-7 1/4 inches tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair and born in Maryland, Otsego Co., NY. He said that he was a clerk at that time.
     William had two real estate transactions recorded in Otsego County; the first in 1877 when he acquired a property from W. H. Gurney and second in 1890 when he acquired a property from C. Hotchkin (his wife or his mother).

The 1st New York Engineers was initially organized in New York City during 1861 but some of its companies were organized in New Jersey and Pennsylvania during 1862-1864. In December 1861 the regiment was sent to Washington and then to Fortress Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. It was assigned to forces under General Thomas Sherman for an expedition under the command of Admiral Samuel F. DuPont for Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, and became the 10th Corps Engineers in the Department of the South. The regiment served in Union campaigns in South Carolina and Georgia during 1862-64. Transferred to Virginia in April 1864, it participated in the major campaigns of the Army of the James and the Army of the Potomac, 1864-65, resulting in the capture of Petersburg and Richmond in April 1865. As part of the engineer corps of the Army of the James, the 1st New York Engineers constructed the Bermuda Hundred Line, laid miles of corduroy roads, operated an engineer depot, and constructed the Dutch Gap Canal. The regiment built fortifications and roads that contributed to the ultimate victory of the Army of the Potomac. Its companies were separately mustered out on June 29, 1865. Hotchkin's New York home is unknown; his regiment included men from sixteen New York counties (Allegany, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Kings, Monroe, New York, Ontario, Orange, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, and Westchester) and New Jersey and Pennsylvania.¹

Physical Characteristics: There are two small volumes, each measuring 3 x 5½ inches in size.

These two Civil War pocket diaries, 1864 and 1865, of a Union soldier, Williams S. Hotchkin, Company E, 1st Regiment New York Engineers ["1st Regiment New York Volunteers (Engineers)," "First New York Regiment of Engineers (Veteran)," "New York Volunteer Corps Engineers," "Serrell's Engineers"] includes daily entries from September 15, 1864 to July 15, 1865. According to the 1864 volume's flyleaf, Hotchkin enlisted on August 30, 1864. During the period covered by these diaries his regiment served in Virginia during the Army of the James' and the Army of the Potomac's (Union) campaigns against the Army of Northern Virginia (Confederate), eventually culminating in the siege and capture of Petersburg and Richmond. In brief entries Hotchkin recounts marching, the weather, Confederate attacks, camp life, and his duties as a company clerk.

After the Union victory Hotchkin, on his own or as part his regiment’s assigned posts, visited Richmond and other Virginia cities during April-July 1865. He describes his regiment's mustering out and his trip home (July 1-15, 1865), carefully noting the hours and cities their steamer passed by or docked during the trip from Richmond to Albany, New York. Hotchkin visited various sites in New York City and expresses the soldiers' unhappiness and frustrations over delays in reaching home and receiving their final pay. The diaries measure 3 x 5½ inches and total contains 200 pages; entries are in pencil (and occasionally, ink), and are at times faint and illegible. Due to constraints in their size entries are often limited to brief sentences.

The 1864 pocket diary (brown binding) contains 120 numbered pages and entries from September 15, 1864 to May 17, 1865, pages 2 to 112. Of interest is "Amount of Clothing Drawn" (page 113), a listing of blankets, canteens, drawers, pants and similar items purchased by Hotchkin from July 16, 1864 to May 2, 1865. Pages 114 to 120 include miscellaneous business accounts, valuation of personal items received from home, and lists of various persons.

The flyleaf of the 1865 pocket diary (black binding) bears a blue five cent Confederate postal stamp of Jefferson Davis [Confederate States Scott No. 7] and an inscription: "W. S. Hotchkin/Co. 'E' 1st N. Y. Engineers/Richmond, Va./May 19th 1865/Traded with James H. Quakenbush at Manchester, Va./May 18th 1865." A second inscription reads: "Read by his son Charles F. Hotchkin at Washington, D.C. May 19, 1907, while delegate to the Baptist Convention. Boat to Norfolk May 20, 1907."

Page one lists regimental officers and their home addresses: Colonel Edward W. Serrell, Lieutenant Colonel James F. Hall, Major Frederick H. Cruso, [James Wainbold?--no rank] and [Wendall Noah?--no rank]. A roster of officers and enlisted men is on pages 13 to 37. The end page of this pocket diary contains Colonel Serrell's address: No. 57 W. Washington Place, New York. Pages 2 to 16, 38 to 48 and several pages after the July 15, 1865 entry are blank. Diary entries begin on page 49 and cover the period of May 6 to July 15, 1865. The earliest entries, May 6-17, 1865 (pages 49-51), are extremely illegible, but a cursory comparison of the handwriting and record-keeping style suggests someone made these other than Hotchkin, perhaps the volume's previous owner, James H. Quakenbush. (Hotchkin consistently begins his entries with the day of week, month, day and year but here these first entries do not.)

Hall (?-1884); Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885); Robert E. Lee (1807-1870); Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865); George B. McClellan (1826-1885); George Gordon Meade (1815-1872); Edwin O. Ord (1818-1883); Francis H. Pierpont (1814-1899); John McAllister Schofield (1831-1906); Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888); and William T. Sherman (1820-1891). Union regiments mentioned by name include the 16th Battery, New York Light Artillery (September 28, 1864), Batteries A & M, 1st U. S. Artillery (January 16 & April 16, 1865), the 3rd New York Cavalry (October 6, 1864), 121st New York Infantry (March 28, 1865), the all-black 25th Corps (April 16, 1865), and two militia (?) units--the 8th and 7th New York (July 3 & 6, 1865).

     William Scott Hotchkin is the son of Charles Dennis (Denny) Hotchkin and Doris Marie Palmquist.

     William Simpson Hotchkin is the son of Hugh Miller Hotchkin Sr. and Thelma Avonelle Simpson. He married Dibet Marie Lapp at Jackson County, MI, USA, on 25 April 1970.¹

     William Smith (Will) Hotchkin was born on 31 December 1862 at Charlotte Village, Niagara County, NY, USA.² He was the son of Noah Frank Hotchkin and Evilena Ann Granville. He married Maroa (Roa) Lason at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, USA, on 25 April 1882.³ He married Emma Lucinda Kinman at Augusta, Hancock County, IL, USA, on 22 January 1896. She is called Emma Hedrick in IL Marriage Index..⁴ William Smith (Will) Hotchkin was a Farmer in 1900. He lived in 16 November 1906 at Central City, Merrick County, NE, USA. William Smith Hotchkin was Grantee on a land parcel on this date. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Golden, Meade County, SD, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Wm. S., 56, b NY; wife Emma L., 46, b IL; son Emery E., 19, b NB; son Glenn W., 16, b NB; dau Lucille C., 13, b NB; dau Mary I., 12, b NB; son George W., 10, b NB; son Wibur W., 5, b SD. Next door lives Clay E. Ness, 24, single and nex to him lives Sylvester Ness, 56.. He died on 3 November 1942 at Detroit, Wayne County, MI, USA, at age 79. He died at the home of his daughter Evelyn Lelia (Mrs Jack Tarr). Hotchkin family Reunion sent a $2.60 floral piece..^5,6,2,7 He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, at Plymouth, Wayne County, MI, USA.

     Information on this family came from records kept by Mabel Hotchkin, Lansing, MI; George W. Hotchkin, Plymouth, MI; and Anthony Hotchkin, Minneapolis, MN. His marriage to Rosa Lason is in Berrien Co. Vitals as copied by LDS. The 1870 census finds him living with his parents in Leslie, Rives Twp., Jackson Co., MI next door to Abram Jr. William Smith was living in Sturgis, South Dakota at death of his brother, Frank Evi in April, 1928 according to Frank's obituary.

His son George W. says that William Smith went to South Dakota to homestead after Aubrey Earl, son of his brother George E., went out there but returned after his wife Emma Lucinda Kinman died in 1937. According to son George W., they returned to Michigan because they had bad winters and in summer it dried out or hailed. William Hotchkin bought property in Central City, Merrick Co., NE on 30 August 1889 from N. C. Wortman. This property consisted of the west 60 feet of Lot 5 and all of Lot 6 in the Jones Addition to Central City. William Hotchkin and his wife sold this same property on 12 March, 1900. A search of Meade Co., SD land records show that William S. Hotchkin received a homestead Land Patent, 7 December 1916, for the NE 1/4 of Sec. 22, T 7, R 11. The Compiler has driven out to this site, near Union Center, SD and there are no signs left of any homestead structures. William granted this property to Christina Johnson on 26 March 1919.
     The 1909 reunion of family members describes him as Will Hotchkin, and indicates that he resided in the Michigan area at that time. The family always knew him as Uncle Will and the Compiler remembers him at family reunions as a tall thin man who liked to talk to children. His son George says that he was born in Augusta, IL on 31 December 1862. The date and location of his marriage comes from his granddaughter Connie Skinner.

     William was born at NY, USA, in November 1895. At the 1900 census he is age 4, born Nov 1895.. He was the son of William Benjamin Hotchkin (Hotchkiss) and Susan E. Bunce. William T. Hotchkin married Jessie Unknown at NY. William T. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1920 at Bronx, Bronx County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin, 52, born Troy, NY, parents born Troy NY, Patrolman for Railroad; wife Jessie, 51, born Troy NY, parents born Troy NY.
The 1915 NY State census says that this is William G. Hotchkin..

     William Wesley Hotchkin was born on 10 September 1930 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA.^1,2,3,4 He was the son of Harold Heman Hotchkin Sr. and Lyda Riley Hemsworth. He married Nicola A. Walcker at Vancouver, Clark County, WA, USA, on 5 September 1964.^5,3 He resided at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, in 1993. William Wesley Hotchkin died on 26 March 1997 at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, at age 66.^6,7,4

     William answered a letter from the Compiler and supplied a lot of dates for his family, son and grandson; he also filled in a bit of missing information on his sister. William worked for Crosetti Bros. along with his brothers Harold and Robert. He was also a millman at a door manufacturing company and a fireman on the UP Railroad.

     Wright Stephen Hotchkin was born in 1846 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI, USA. He was the son of Thomas H. Hotchkin and Mary Ann (Molly) Brown. Wright Stephen Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1850 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI. The census lists the family as: He is with his parents.. He resided at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI, in 1868. He married Margaret J. Horrigan at Washtenaw County, MI, USA, on 26 January 1875.^1,2 Wright Stephen Hotchkin died on 21 August 1909 at Wichita, Sedgwick County, KS, USA. His wife is a widow at the 1910 census and the 1915 city directory says that she is a widow.There is a W. S. Hotchkin buried in Block 1, Lot 159, Grave 2 at the Highland Cemetery, Wichita, Sedgwick County, KS, who died 21 aug 1909. They give no birth information or other way of identifying the individual..³ He was buried at Highland Cemetery, at Wichita, Sedgwick County, KS, USA.

     The 1850 census of Ann Arbor has him listed as Stephen W. The Polk Directory of 1868, Ann Arbor, MI shows him living with Thomas Hotchkin at the NE end of Broadway Rd., Ann Arbor. In later editions this address was called 129 Broadway. Both men are carpenters. The next available edition is 1872 and he no longer appears. In the 1895 Directory of Chicago, IL, he is in the novelties business as (Hotchkin and Smith), (Wright S. Hotchkin and Wellington D. Smith), the business was operated at 1226 Newport Ave., Chicago, IL and the Hotchkin family lived at 1438 Noble Street. The Will probate file of Thomas H. Hotchkin has a letter, dated 21 November 1904, signed W. S. Hotchkin in Temple, TX and saying that he is a son of Thomas H. and should be considered in the Will. He has died by the 1910 Census and his widow, Margaret is living in Flint, Michigan as a boarder. At the 1915 directory of Flint, she is listed as Margaret Hotchkin (wd Wright S.), boarding at 821 Lyon.

     Wyatt Cade Hotchkin is the son of Trent Dale Hotchkin and Jane Dee Bartsias.

     Yolanda Hotchkin is the daughter of Gary Hotchkin and Kathy Fusco.

     Zebulon Hotchkin was born on 26 March 1812 at CT, USA. He was the son of Seth Hodgkin Dea. and Stata (Stella) Hale. He married Elizabeth Ann Hall at NY, USA, circa 1833. He married Catharine Johnston at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA, circa 1842.¹ Zebulon Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Zebulan, 48, 1811, NY; Catharine, 48. 1811; Frances, 16 1843, NY; Marion, 7, 1852, NY.. He married Hannah Jane Haels at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, USA, on 1 March 1888. New York, New York Marriage Index 1866- 1937. He is called Jebulon Hotchkin, she Hannah Haels.. Zebulon Hotchkin died on 1 August 1890 at Rockland, Sullivan County, NY, USA, at age 78.^2,3,4 He was buried at Riverview Cemetery, at Roscoe, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

     The family moved from Connecticut to Dutchess Co., NY and then to Liberty about 1825. At the New York State census of 1855, he and his wife Catherine had lived in Liberty for 29 years. Her place of birth was given as Dutchess Co., NY and his as CT. His family had moved from CT to NY shortly after his birth in 1812 and then from Amenia, NY to Liberty about 1825. In 1886 he moved to Kansas but returned to Liberty in a year or two. This trip was reported as testimony at his brother Francis' Will probate hearing. After the return from Kansas, the family moved to Rockland, NY. He died 1 August 1890 and his Will was probated 2 February 1891. His third wife, Hanna Jane was named as executrix of the Will, dated 16 May 1888, Patterson, NJ. The Will named his wife, Hanna Jane, his son Frank, and his grandson Walter Hotchkin of Rockland.

     Benjamin was born at NY, USA, in 1832. Age 17 at the 1850 census.. He was the son of Thomas Hotchkins. Benjamin F Hotchkins appeared on the census of 1850 at New York City, New York County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Benj, age 17, b NY, ships carpenter, living with Thomas Hotchkin, age 40, b Maine.. He died in 1899.

     Charles D. Hotchkins was born in 1855 at Steuben County, NY, USA. He was the son of David Hotchkins and Caroline Unknown.

     Daniel Hotchkins was born in 1809 at ME, USA. He married Lydia Unknown circa 1836 at ME. Daniel Hotchkins appeared on the census of 1850 at Mount Desert, Hancock County, ME, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkins, Daniel, 40 (1809), ME, Shoemaker; Lydia, 28 (1821), ME; Susan, 12 (1837), ME; Sophia, 9 (1840), ME; Lydia, 4 (1845), ME; John Hinkley, 12, ME..

     Compiler does not find this Daniel in any other census, so has no way of checking to see if he is a Hotchkin or Hotchkiss.

     David Hotchkins was born circa 1850. He was employed in 1892 as a Roofer. He resided at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA, in 1898.

     David's name and occupation was found in the 1892 Philadelphia City Directory. The 1900 census finds no David Hotchkin, Hotchkins or Hotchkiss in Philadelphia.

     David Hotchkins was born in 1827 at Otsego County, NY, USA. He married Caroline Unknown circa 1853 at NY, USA. David Hotchkins appeared on the census of 1860 at Corning, Steuben County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkins, David, 32, 1827, Otsego Co, NY; Caroline, 34, 1825, Steuben Co NY; Charles D, age 5, 1854, Steuben Co NY; Helen, age 3, 1856, Steuben Co NY..

     It is likely that this is a Hotchkin. Son Charles appears in a later census as Hotchkin. The only other David that comes close to this David is David P. born in ME.

     David was born at ME, USA, in 1826. He was age 24 at the 1850 census.. He married Mary Ann Unknown at ME circa 1847. David P. Hotchkins was a Carpenter in 1850. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Cranberry Isles, Hancock County, ME, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, David P., age 24, b ME, carpenter; wife Mary Ann, age 19, b ME; son Harvey W., age 1, b ME. Nearby live Israel Hotchkin, age 32, and his family. Dew 43, Fam 47.

     David and his wife Mary Ann were both born in ME according to the 1850 census of Cranberry Isle, Hancock Co., ME. They live near Israel Hotchkins.
     Compiler does not find them in any other census. It is lekely that they are not Hotchkin.

     Harvey W. Hotchkins was born circa 1848 at ME, USA. He was the son of David P. Hotchkins and Mary Ann Unknown.

     Helen Hotchkins was born in 1857 at Steuben County, NY, USA. She was the daughter of David Hotchkins and Caroline Unknown.

     Lydia Hotchkins was born in 1845 at ME, USA. She was the daughter of Daniel Hotchkins and Lydia Unknown.

     Mark was born at MA, USA, in 1832. Age 17 at the 1850 census.. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Boston, Suffolk County, MA, USA. The census lists the family as: Mark Hotchkin, age 17 and an apprentice to George W. Smith, a Blacksmith..

     The 1850 census of Boston 10 Ward, Suffolk Co., MA finds Mark, age 17, born CT, a single man living as an apprentice, in the home of George W. Smith, a blacksmith.
