     Thomas was born at ME, USA, in 1809. Age 40 at the 1850 census.. He was a Ships Carpenter in 1850. He appeared on the census of 1850 at New York City, New York County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Thomas age 40, b Maine, ship carpenter, living with Benj Hotchkin, age 17, b NY..

     This seems to be one of the Maine Hotchkins. The 1850 census of NYC, Ward 7 finds him living with a 17 year old, named Benjamen Hotchkin, born in NY. There is no firm evidence that Thomas is Benjamen's father.

     Thomas is found in the 1870 census of Sacramento Co., CA. This census says that he was born in ME. The Compiler has never identified any of the Maine family or connected them to the Guilford, CT family.

     Walter E. Hotchkins was born in 1872 at NY, USA. He resided at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA, in 1905. He married Virginia Ross Sheibley at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, in 1918. Walter E. Hotchkins was employed circa 1920 as a Manager of a Candy Factory. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkins, Walter E., 48, b NY, father born in England, mother in NY; wife Virginia S., 29, b PA, parents born in PA, Walter manages a candy factory. 187-17-14. He died in April 1935 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. Wife was a widow at the 1940 census.. He was buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, at Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, PA, USA.

     Walter in not a member of our family but he is included here just to keep track of him.

     Abigail and her two husbands had no living descendants in 1922 according to a Charles E. Hotchkiss letter to the Hotchkiss Family Association.

     Ann was born at NY, USA, in 1803. She married Samuel Edward Warner at Cairo, Greene Gounty, NY, USA, on 25 March 1821. Ann died on 17 June 1890 at Hamilton County, NY, USA.1 She was buried at Madison Street Cemetery, at Hamilton, Madison County, NY, USA.

     All the information on Ann Maria and this family comes from the DAR File 50906 of Lucy Warner Coleman.
The Compiler is almost sure that this is the daughter of Henry and Sarah Hotchkiss, ages 71 and 68, who live next door to the Warner's at the 1850 census of Otselic, Chenango, NY.

She married Christopher Miller at Hartford, Hartford County, CT, USA, on 2 October 1822. Married by Rev Nathaniel S. Wheaton of the Hartford Christ Church..3,4 Aurelia Shields Hotchkiss died on 21 October 1839 at Brenham, Washington County, TX, USA, at age 40. Died of the Yellow fever epidemic of 1839 in the coastal areas of Texas. Obituary says died at 1:00 am this morning according to the Morning Star. Unfortunily the city of the Morning Start is not identified, but likely it was the Houston Morning Star which began publication in April 1839..5,2,6

     Aurelia and her sons Jeremiah and Charles all died within one week due to Yellow Fever, while they were residing in Texas during 1839.
Her middle name comes from William Hathaway.

She must have lived with her parents as this address is also the address given at her mothers death.. She was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, at Hartford, Hartford County, CT, USA.

     Her obituary says that she remained unmarried, and taught for 25 years at the Horace Mann School of Music and lived at 54 Morningside Dr. A web search gives the location of the Horace Mann School of Music as Hartford, CT.

     Charles Erling Hotchkiss was born on 3 December 1861 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, USA. Age 8 at the 1870 census. His birth day is given as 2 December when on the USS Volendam on 21 July 1923.2 He was the son of Jeremiah Hotchkiss and Caroline Elizabeth Darrow. Charles Erling Hotchkiss was a Lawyer in June 1888 at New York City, New York County, NY, USA. He was graduated in 1888 from Columbia University, New York City, New York County, NY, USA. He married Edith Laura Parks at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA, on 28 December 1892.3 Charles Erling Hotchkiss appeared on the census of 1910 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Charles E. Hotchkins, 48, married once, 17 years, born NY, parents born CT; wife Edith L., 48, married once, 17 years, 1 child, 1 living; born MA, father born VT, mother born NY; dau Elizabeth N., 14, single, born NY.. Charles died on 17 January 1939 at New York City, New York County, NY, at age 77.4 He was buried at Mahaiwe Cemetery, at Great Barrington, Berkshire County, MA, USA.

     Charles was the grandson of Ambrose who changed his name from Hotchkin to Hotchkiss. His memoirs are published in NEHGR, including data on his ancestors. He was a graduate of Trinity College, 1882, and received an MA there in 1886 after which he was awarded an LLB from Columbia in 1888 and became a member of the New York Bar in June 1888. He began his practice in New York City with the firm of Davies, Auerbach, Cornell and Hardy and stayed with this firm until he retired 31 December 1936. His wife Edith and daughter Elizabeth survived him. In 1922, Charles wrote a letter to the Hotchkiss Family Association defining the descendants of Ambrose Hodgkin.5,6

The year is very likely wrong as a 1797 birth would make her birth near that of her sister Aurelia..1 She was the daughter of Ambrose Hodgkin and Sarah E. Barnard. Jemina Hotchkiss married Lyman Smith, son of Abram Smith and Malby Johnson, on 9 June 1829 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, USA. St. Annes Church.1 Jemina Hotchkiss appeared on the census of 1850 at Derby, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Lyman Smith, age 60, born CT, Merchant, $1,000; Jemima, 50, born CT; Sarah, 20, born CT; Rodney. 17, Born CT, clerk; Louisa H., 15, born CT; John W. Eldridge, 10, born TX; Frances J. Parker, 2, born TX.. She died on 6 February 1876 at Middletown, Middlesex County, CT, USA, at age 79.2 She was buried at Elm Street Cemetery, at Ansonia, New Haven County, CT, USA.

     According to the 1922 letter of Charles E. Hotchkin to the Hotchkiss Family Association, Jemima and Lyman had no living descendants in 1922. Living with them at the 1850 census were John Wood Eldridge and Frances J. Parker age 10 and 2. Jemima was their grand aunt. The birth of the Smith children according to the 1850 census predates the marriages as recorded in the Ambrose Hotchkiss bible records so these may be children of an earlier marriage of Lyman or the marriage date may be in error. Notes in the files of William Hathaway says that the two girls are the daughters of Sarah and Aurelia Hotchkiss. The boy Rodney is not identified.

Leander Hotchkiss

     Leander was born at NY, USA, on 9 November 1830. 1850 census gives birth location as NY..1 He was the son of Leander Shields Hotchkiss and Sarah Low. Leander Hotchkissserved during the Civil War. Lost in the battle of Antietam. He died on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg, Washington County, MD, USA, at age 31. He was buried at Grove Cemetery, at Windsor Locks, Hartford County, CT, USA.

     Leander served in the Civil War, first enlisting in Co. G, 1st Inf. Regt on 20 April 1861 and mustering in on 23 April 1861 and being discharged on 31 July 1861; after which he reenlisted in Co., C, 1st Bn, 14th US Regulars. He was killed at Antetam.

     Leander Shields Hotchkiss was born on 11 March 1803 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.3,4 He was the son of Ambrose Hodgkin and Sarah E. Barnard. He married Sarah Low at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY, USA, in October 1826.3,5 Leander Shields Hotchkiss appeared on the census of 1870 at Windsor, Hartford County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Leander Hotchkiss, 66, working on farm, born CT. He died on 11 April 1878 at Hartford, Hartford County, CT, USA, at age 75. Gravestone says died April 18th at age 78..3 He was buried at Grove Cemetery, at Windsor Locks, Hartford County, CT, USA.

     Leander and Sarah resided at Hartford, CT where he was a master machinist. The family is described in William Henry VanBenschoten's Book, Concerning the VanBenschoten Family in America.6

She married Orrin Crosby at CT, USA, circa 1816.3 She married Charles Atwood at CT. Letter gives marriage as 15 apr 1957..3 Lydia Redfield Hotchkiss appeared on the census of 1870 at Milford, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Lydia Atwood, 75, born CT, living with stepson Chaucy C. Crosby.. She died on 9 March 1878 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ, USA, at age 82. Exact date and location from William Hathaway and the Ambrose Hotchkiss bible..1,4 She was buried at Oak Cliff Cemetery, at Derby, New Haven County, CT, USA.

     Lydia had 3 children by her first marriage to Orrin, Jane, Chauncy and Mary. By her second marriage to Charles she had 1 child, Sarah.
