     Warren Stewart Dr. was born on 21 July 1841 at Campbell, Steuben County, NY, USA.¹ He resided at Savona, Steuben County, NY, USA, in 1860. He married Catherine Adeline (Kate) Van Housen at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA, on 15 September 1863.¹ Warren Stewart Dr. died in 1886 at Rockwood, Roane County, TN, USA.¹

     Dr. Steward had bronchial pneumonia at age 44 and was advised to move to a warmer climate, so the family moved to Rockwood, TN in 1869. They returned to Prattsburg for one year in 1879 but returned again to Tennessee where he died.

Age 30 at the 1860 census of New York City.Staying in a hotel and working for Lee Ins Co.¹ He was the son of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. He married Sarah Ann Jenne at VT, USA, on 4 March 1856.² Benjamin Franklin Stiles died on 11 January 1906 at Berkshire, Franklin County, VT, USA, at age 76.¹ He was buried at Berkshire Center Cemetery, at Franklin County, VT, USA.

     Talma says that he was a farmer and resides in Berkshire, VT.

     Elsie M. Stiles was born on 8 June 1828 at VT, USA. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Elsie M. Stiles married Charles Stewart Jenne on 15 March 1848.

     Frank Henry Stiles was born on 28 December 1873 at CA, USA. 1900 census. He was the son of Paschal Pulaski Stiles and Caroline Brown. Frank Henry Stiles died on 16 August 1958 at Tulare County, CA, USA, at age 84. He was buried at Tulare Cemetery, at Tulare, Tulare County, CA, USA.

     Hannah L. Stiles was born on 8 October 1838 at VT, USA. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Hannah L. Stiles married August Perry Carmack on 6 July 1854. A WA Marriage Certificate for a daughter has the name as Hannah H. Stitis..¹ Hannah L. Stiles died on 21 April 1863 at Paicines, San Benito County, CA, USA, at age 24.

     Harriet M. Stiles was born on 12 October 1832 at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT, USA. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. She married George Wellington Colburn at VT, USA, on 21 October 1849.¹ Harriet M. Stiles lived in 1900 at Lucerne, Lake County, CA, USA.²

     Hendrick Stiles was born on 12 January 1825 at VT, USA. Age 26 at the 1850 census of Bryon, IL. He was the son of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Hendrick Stiles appeared on the census of 1880 at Empire, Stanislaus County, CA, USA. The census lists the family as: He is living with his brother Paschal and his family.. He died in 1887 at Stanislaus County, CA, USA. He was buried at Modesto Pioneer Cemetery, at Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA, USA.

     He was unmarried living in Modesto, CA according to Talma. He and his brother Paschal emigrated from IL to CA overland with their own teams of horses.

     Howard Rufus (Rufe) Stiles was born on 13 September 1887 at Canada. He was the son of William Miller Stiles and Mary Inez Ranney. Howard Rufus (Rufe) Stiles died on 16 June 1937 at Flushing, Queens County, NY, USA, at age 49. He was buried at Flushing Cemetery, at Flushing, Genesee County, MI, USA.

     Lorana Stiles was born circa 1825 at VT, USA. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Lorana Stiles died in 1883.

     The 1880 census gives Nathaniel Stiles, age 77, born Canada and Huldah, age 77, born VT.

     Mary Ann Stiles was born on 4 May 1834 at VT, USA. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Mary Ann Stiles married Christopher Carmack on 26 January 1856 at VT. She is also called Mary Ann Styles..¹ Mary Ann Stiles died in 1958.

     Paschal Pulaski Stiles was born on 16 September 1826 at VT, USA. Age 23 at the 1850 census of Chemung, IL. Birth date in 1900 census. He was the son of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. He married Caroline Brown at Harvard, McHenry County, IL, USA, on 16 April 1854. 1900 census married 50 years.. He resided at Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA, USA, in 1900. Paschal Pulaski Stiles died on 15 April 1908 at Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA, at age 81. He was buried at Modesto Pioneer Cemetery, at Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA, USA.

     Pascal with his family and brother Hendrick, emigrated from Illinois to California, making the journey overland with their own teams.¹

Age 47 at the 1880 census. 1900 census of Roseburg, Clark County, WI gives Jan 1837 and says that she is widowed. She was the daughter of Samuel Stevens Stiles and Hannah Talma Hendrick. Rhoda Page Stiles married David J. Carpenter on 20 June 1851 at VT, USA. Rhoda Page Stiles lived in 1906 at Black River Falls, Jackson County, WI, USA.¹ She died on 26 November 1909 at Black River Falls, Jackson County, WI, at age 73.

     Samuel Stevens Stiles was born on 1 September 1797 at Chester, Windsor County, VT, USA. Age 53 at the 1850 census of McHenry, IL. Cemetery records say 10 Mar 1797. He was the son of Nathaniel T. Stiles and Elsa Stevens. He married Hannah Talma Hendrick at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT, USA, on 26 August 1821.¹ Samuel Stevens Stiles appeared on the census of 1850 at Chemung, McHenry County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Samuel Stiles, 53, farmer, born VT; Hannah, 50, born VT; son Paschal P., 23, born VT; son Hearman I., 11, born VT.. He died on 12 February 1866 at McHenry County, IL, USA, at age 68. He was buried at Mound Grove Cemetery, at Kankakee, Kankakee County, IL, USA.

     He was born after the death of his father and as a boy lived with Mr Harris, later his boyhood was mostly spent in Chester, Clarendon and Vergennes, VT. He told of having heard the cannonading during the battle of Platttsburg in the War of 1812.

STILES, HON. WILLIAM HOWARD, born in Enosburgh, Vt., June 21, 1823, was the eldest son in a family of ten children born to Samuel and Hannah (Hendrick) Stiles.

His father was a native of Chester, Vt., and came to Enosburgh during his early manhood, where he engaged in farming.

William H. attended the district schools of his native town, and was for a time a student at the Enosburgh Academy. After finishing his education he cleared a farm in Enosburgh and was for a number of years engaged in agricultural pursuits.

About 1847 he came to Montgomery, where he commenced the manufacture of butter tubs. He sold this plant after operating it three and a half years, and in October, 1851, located about one mile south of Montgomery Center, where he built a saw-mill and also again manufactured butter tubs. He remained in business here till March, 1883, during which time he was associated with different parties as partner. On the date mentioned he formed a partnership with Alfred B. Nelson, and the manufacture of butter tubs was carried on at Montgomery Center. This partnership was in existence at the time of the death of Mr. Stiles.

In 1873 he purchased of Columbus Greene his stock in the general store at Montgomery Center, which business he conducted during his life. In 1883 he built the present store building, his late residence, and a number of other buildings in Montgomery Center.

A Republican in politics he represented Montgomery in the legislatures of 1868 and 1869, and was a member of the state Senate of 1872. At the time of his death he was associate judge for Franklin County Courts, he having been elected to that office in 1888.

He married, September 25, 1844, Betsey, daughter of William and Mary (Giddings) Miller. Their children are Annette, wife of Samuel N. Dix, of Montgomery, and William M., a resident of Montreal, Canada.

The judge died suddenly March 31, 1891, mourned and respected by all who knew him.

     Talma quotes William, "My parents being poor, I began to work out when 8 years old, working the first summer for my board and clothes, and after that receiving wages by the month or year, reserving 3 months in the winter each year, till twenty years of age, for attending the district school, working after school hours to pay my board. A large share of my wages during my minority years went for the support of our large family. I commenced life for myself by buying 50 acres of wild mountain land, which I cleared, hiring my board, meanwhile, of the nearest neighbor, and selling the product received from the land. In the course of 3 years I had the land mostly cleared of timber, at which time I sold it, and began the manufacture of butter tubs and lumber.²

     William Miller Stiles was born on 26 October 1859 at Montgomery Center, Franklin County, VT, USA. He was the son of William Howard Stiles and Betsey Miller. He married Mary Inez Ranney at VT, USA, on 30 June 1886. William Miller Stiles died on 15 October 1914 at Flushing, Queens County, NY, USA, at age 54. He was buried at Flushing Cemetery, at Flushing, Queens County, NY, USA.

     According to Talma William graduated in 1879 from the St Johnsbury, VT academy, and in 1884 from the University of Vermont, with a degree of Ph B. He has since been employed as a chemist for the firm of Wm. Johnson & Co of Montreal, CAN.

     Henry Brewster Stillman was born on 23 September 1847 at Manhattan, New York County, NY, USA. A passport application says that the year was 1849. He married Emma Stirling Dodge Hotchkiss, daughter of Jeremiah Hotchkiss and Caroline Elizabeth Darrow, on 15 June 1893 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, USA. Henry Brewster Stillman died before 1920.

     Dora Lavina Stillson was born on 14 June 1880 at CT, USA.¹ She married Gilbert Eugene Hotchkin at CT circa 1901. Dora Lavina Stillson lived in 1958 at Darien, Fairfield County, CT, USA. The City Directiry lists her as Mrs Dora Hotchkin, employed at 72 Richmond Hill Rd. She died on 8 April 1970 at Lehigh Acres, Lee County, FL, USA, at age 89. Dora L. Hotchkin, 89, of 15 Maple Ave., Lehigh Acres,(Florida) died Wed. at the residence of her daughter. She had moved to Lehigh Acres five years ago from Bridgeport, CT. She was a member of the First Community Congregational Church of Lehigh Acres.
She is survived by her daughtrer, Mrs. Ella Mather of Lehigh Acres and one grandchild. The body will be sent to Albert W. Spear Funeral Home in Bridgeport, Ct. Funeral service with burial in Long Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, CT. Farley Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
