Charles Elias Hochkin

M, (15 April 1856 - 24 September 1907)
Charles Elias Hochkin was born on 15 April 1856 at New Haven County, CT, USA. Birth Ledger of the town of Orange, (page 1 of 2). He was the son of Samuel Abraham Hochkin and Emily M. Clark. Charles Elias Hochkin married Ada Larke circa 1877 at CT, USA. Charles Elias Hochkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Manhattan, New York County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Charles E. Hochkin, 25, born CT, parents born CT, Burnisher; wife Ada, 18, born NYC, parents born England; dau Maude, 2, born CT.. He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Berg on 18 August 1894 at New York City, New York County, NY, USA. Called Elizabeth Matthews in Wedding documents.. Charles Elias Hochkin died on 24 September 1907 at Manhattan, New York County, NY, at age 51. NY, NY Death Index 1682 to 1948.

No other censuses have any information on Charles or Ada. Charles Jr. is only found in birth records. According to the 1910 census her birth date is incorrect as she was not there at that census.
Middle initial from 1900 census.
According to an Internet post Charles had a second marriage to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Berg Chapman and they had five children. This must be the 1894 marriage listed in NY Marriages; which would make Charles Jr, born 1901, a son of this second marriage.

Charles Henry Hochkin

M, (22 November 1809 - before 1827)
Charles Henry Hochkin was born on 22 November 1809 at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, USA.1 He was the son of Elias Hochkin and Clarinda Gaston. Charles died before 1827 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. He is not listed with other grand children in grandfather Joseph's Will.. He married Rebecca Mnu circa 1830 at NY, USA. Charles Henry Hochkin was buried at Grove Street Cemetery, at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. One stone in his parents cemetery plot looks as if it says Charles..

Charles must have died prior to April 1827 as he is not listed with the rest of the grand children in Joseph Hochkin's Will. It is likely that he is buried with his parents as one stone looks as though the first name might be Charles. He is not listed on cemetery records, but there are 3 stones that do not appear on the records.

Elias Hochkin

M, (1785 - 14 August 1824)
Elias Hochkin was born in 1785 at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, USA. He was the son of Joseph Hochkin and Abigail Horton. He married Clarinda Gaston at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, on 8 November 1807. Marriage of Elias and Clarinda Gaston recorded in Vital Records, Richmond, MA and shown in Shepard Probate Records. Their "Intention of Marriage" was recorded in Richmond Town records..1,2 Elias Hochkin appeared on the census of 1820 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Elias, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 to 45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 26 to 45; 1 person engaged in commerce. At this census, Elias and Joseph are living on adjacent properties.. He married Sarah (Sally) Unknown at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, after 1819. This marriage is found only in his Will.. Elias Hochkin died on 14 August 1824 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT.3 He was buried at Grove Street Cemetery, at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA.4

Elias was a well-known man in the New Haven area and when he died, his death was reported in 10 different newspapers with a number of different ages given. Elias and his family were members of the 1st Congregational Church of New Haven and their records list his death as 17 August 1824. During his lifetime he generally used his name as Hochkin but his Will used both the old and new spelling. His burial is in Grove Street Cemetery in a large family plot that he purchased from the original owner, William Gorham (S 1/2, Lot 8, Vol 67, pg 151, 27 July 1818, New Haven Land Records.) Elias was a grocery merchant in New Haven with a store on Broadway Street and at his death the inventory of his store was transferred to his father Joseph who was his business partner. This inventory was in great detail and rather interesting, for example: 3 chamber bowls $.50; 19 black balls $.54; 12 1/2 pounds of candles $1.50; 86 gals Rum $55.90; 3 pecks clover seed $3.75; 1 cast iron stove $10.00; 20 gals wine $13.00; 1 jar of mustard $.30; 1 desk 3.00; etc. The total inventory of approximately 300 items was casted at $1321.25. Elias wife was appointed Administrator of his Will but declined. This document referred to her as Sally.
Land records in Richmond, MA show that Elias was buying and selling land in that area from 1818 to 1823. Elias also bought and sold a number of land parcels in New Haven during his lifetime. "Sold to his father Joseph for $1,000.00 land on Broadway St., New Haven, Vol 66, p 436, 13 May 1817." "Broadway property given to Livina Kingley and Abigail Hochkin, Vol 69, p 508, 28 September 1826 by Will."
His marriage to Sarah is proven by another land transaction, "Sarah Moore, late Sarah Hochkin, widow of Elias Hochkin, sold Broadway property, Vol 86, p 427, 28 November 1835". This is the only information on his marriage to Sarah.
Accordin to the 1820 census we have one male child missing in the family. He would have been born between 1810 and 1820.

Joseph Hochkin1,2

M, (27 November 1758 - 29 April 1827)
Joseph Hochkin was born on 27 November 1758 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.3,4 He was the son of Abraham Hochkin Jr. and Sarah Stone. He married Abigail Horton.5 Joseph Hochkin appeared on the census of 1820 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Joseph, 1 male under 10, 1 male 45 and up; 1 female under 10, 1 female 26 to 45, 1 female 45 and up; 1 person engaged in commerce. At this census, Elias and Joseph are living on adjacent properties.. He died on 29 April 1827 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, at age 68.6 He was buried at Grove Street Cemetery, at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. Cemetery records give age as 67,born 1759..7

Joseph and his wife Abigail used the "Hochkin" spelling of their names as used by Cornwall, Richmond and New Haven branches of the family. It is clear that this was an intentional spelling of the name as the Compiler has seen several samples of Joseph's signature. Joseph and Abigail lived for a period of time in Richmond, MA and all of their children were married in Richmond or Lenox. Their children used the Hochkin spelling of their names at the time of marriage.
A Deed dated 16 January 1790, from Mathew Barron to Joseph Hotchkin (note the modern spelling) in which a parcel of land in Richmond, Berkshire Co., MA was conveyed to Joseph, who's address was given as Cornwall, CT sets the approximate date of their move from Cornwall, CT to Richmond, MA. Their first two purchases of land in New Haven, during 1814-1817, used a Richmond address and an 1818 purchase used a New Haven address.
Their names appear in a number of New Haven land records; among these are: Joseph and Abigail Hotchkin of Rick, Berkshire Co., MA sold to Sarah Parrot, wife of Martin Parrot a 3 1/4 acre tract of land in Westfield, New Haven Co., CT; given to Abigail by her father Samuel Horton. (New Haven Land Records, Vol 52, p 367, 1805). Joseph Hotchkin a resident of Richmond, MA buys from Isaac Mix, land on Broadway Street. (New Haven Land Records, Vol 62, p 416, 5 May 1815). Joseph Hotchkin and Jonathan Nichols grant to Elias Hotchkin, Joseph's son, land on Broadway, (Vol 67, p 150, 27, July 1818).
Joseph and Abigail were members of the 1st Congregational Society of New Haven and Joseph's death is listed in their records. They are both buried in the historic old Grove Street Cemetery in the site purchased by Elias for their families. The first part of this cemetery was opened in 1814 and it holds such famous men as Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, and Theophilus Eaton the founder and first Governor of New Haven. The Hochkin Family grave has a single tall spear stone with all the names on it: "Joseph Hochkin, died April 28 1827, at age 67." "Abigail Hochkin, died December 5 1829, age 70."
Joseph was a partner in his son Elias' grocery store and received the inventory of the store when Elias died. At Joseph's death, his Will, Probate #4687, gives one-third of his estate to his "beloved wife Abigail", to his grand daughters, Mary Ann and Amanda, children of my son Elias; each a sum of $50.00; and to his grand son Samuel, son of Elias, a sum of $25.00. All the rest of his estate, he gave to his three daughters, Tabitha Gaston, Lovinia Kingley, and Abigail Dudley.

Lavinia Hochkin

F, (1787 - 20 February 1873)
Lavinia was born at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, USA, in 1787. Birth year calculated from age 86 at death.. She was the daughter of Joseph Hochkin and Abigail Horton. She married Adonijah Kingsley at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, on 15 May 1805.1,2,3 Lavinia died on 20 February 1873 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA.4 She was buried on 22 February 1873 at Grove Street Cemetery, at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA.5

Lavina's marriage to Adonijah Kingley is documented in a number of locations, including the Richmond Town Records where it indicated both the filing of the Intention of Marriage and the Marriage Record; however, no date is given on these records. The Berkshire Star gives a date of 1806. This same date is also given in "Families of Ancient New Haven," by Jacobus. The death records are found in records of the 1st Congregational Church, New Haven, Vol 5, pg 242.
It is possible that she had later marriages to Jeduthan Thomas and William Clifford as they are buried in the Elias Hochkin family plot. Thomas' gravestone says 1807-1850. Clifford has no stone but is recorded in the cemetery office. There is also a Susan Thomas buried in the plot with no stone or dates in the cemetery records. These men could also be later husbands of Lavina's sister Abigail.
It is known that Lavina had two children as the 1st Congregational Church of New Haven has the entry, "N.W. Taylor baptized two children of Livina Hochkin, 9 September, 1821."2

Mary Ann was alive and described as under 21 when her grandfather, Joseph Hochkin's Will was probated. Her name was spelled Hotchkin in this Will. We believe that she is buried in Grove St Cemetery with her parents as a gravestone has Mary -------- on it, with nothing but Mary readable. There are 3 gravestones that do not appear on the cemetery records.

Maude married William Allen Campbell. William born about 1866 according to marriage license. Oliver Hochkin1

M, (16 October 1774 - 2 January 1861)
Oliver Hochkin was born on 16 October 1774 at Cornwall, Litchfield County, CT, USA. Baptised 18 December 1774 according to Starr.2,3,4 He was the son of Abraham Hochkin Jr. and Sarah Stone. He married Cynthia Jackson at Cornwall, Litchfield County, CT, on 4 October 1798. Starr gives the marriage date as 6 October 1798..5,4 Oliver Hochkin appeared on the census of 1840 at Bethany, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Oliver Hotchkins, 1 male 60-70 (1770-1780); 1 female 50-60 (1880-1890).. He left a will on 22 January 1859 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. He lived in 1860 at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. He died on 2 January 1861 at Columbia, Tolland County, CT, USA, at age 86.6 He was buried at Grove Street Cemetery, at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. Lot 49, Laurel St.

Oliver's birth and marriage is listed in Jacobus, Families of Ancient New Haven, and his birth and family relationship is given in Talcott and NEHGR. Oliver used the name Hochkin in Cornwall and that is the name on his grave. Most of the land records have Hotchkin, but sometimes he signed Hochkin. According to a Deed recorded in Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT he was living there in January 1803.
Many land records show his purchase and sales activity in New Haven from about 1845 until 1859. Some more interesting of these records are the following: In 1854 Oliver Deeds to Sarah Brown 1/8 of Lot 49 in the City Burying Grounds. The Browns are buried in this portion of the lot. 2. On 1 May 1848 Jason Brown and Henry Sanford sell to Oliver of Bethany, New Haven Co. land in New Haven City. 3. Lavina Kingsley sells Oliver the N 1/2 of Lot 49 of the City Burying Grounds. 4. Isaac Mosher grants to Oliver property on Pearl St. in New Haven on 19 January 1856.
Several Deeds show that Oliver was a money lender with real property as the security for the loan. Oliver Hotchkin Deeds to Isaac Mosher for the sum of $1.00, land that Mosher mortgaged to Oliver on 19 January 1856. Oliver grants to Edson Sperry furniture in the house at 12 Martin St.: One sofa, 12 cane bottom chairs, 4 feather beds, 2 rocking chairs, 20 yds. of ingrain carpeting, 2 rag carpets 60 yds., 2 painted wash stands, 1 candle stand, 4 maple bedsteads, 3 glass lamps, 1 chest of drawers and contents, 2 painted dressing stands, 1 mahogany candle stand, 1 gilt framed looking glass. Oliver's last Deed on 22 Jan 1859 was the most interesting of all. Oliver Granted to Rosaling Sperry, wife of Edson Sperry, Oliver J. Whiting of New Marlbough, MA and Laura S. Merwin, wife of George Merwin the property that Oliver Hochkin owned on Old Street in New Haven. He made this Grant under the condition that these three persons would care for him, in a careful manner, the rest of his life. If this care was not given, the property was to revert to him. He died almost exactly two years later. His death was reported in New Haven Vital Records. In his Will, dated 22 January 1859, he uses the name Hotchkin. He left over $2,000 to various entities including a Hannah Hotchkin, likely the daughter of his brother Rozel, living in South Egremont, MA. He also left $200 to any of the daughters of his brother Abner for the care of Abner's daughter Abigail. Oliver left $200 to Jeherza Sperry, wife of Fowler Sperry and the same amount to Souiza Hart, wife of Alfred Hart. Neither of these parties were identified. To the Second Baptist Society, Wooster Place House, he left $1000 to be held and kept in a special fund. This fund was to be invested in mortgage securities, the real estate to have at least twice the value of the unpaid loan. The income and interest thereon was to be annually appropriated by said Society toward the support of such poor and needy persons, belonging to or worshiping with said Society. If the Society failed to provide in the manner specified, the funds were to be given to the First Baptist Society, to be invested in the same manner. The Compiler tried to investigate this bequest to see if the trust still existed. The present minister of the church knew nothing of the fund or its conditions. It must have been long gone, against the wishes of Oliver. Oliver is buried in plot 49 Laurel St., at Grove Street Cemetery, which he purchased from Lavina Kingley, the daughter of his brother Joseph. The Barbour Collection gives his birth in Cornwall on 16 October 1774.7,8,9
