     The Compiler deducted Mary's surname from the fact that at the 1880 census, a Maria Mapes, age 12, is living with Henry and Mary and called a sister-in-law.
She was the daughter of Moses Charles Mapes and Mary Ellsworth. She had at least 4 marriages to Henry Goodrich, Aaron Kennedy, John Kemp and a Mr Wall.

Harriett Schultz says that both Cleveland and Cleaveland was used for the middle name.

     John P. Marshall was born on 14 February 1845 at Canada. He married Elsie Ann Carpenter, daughter of David J. Carpenter and Rhoda Page Stiles, in 1875 at WI, USA. John P. Marshall died on 18 April 1933 at age 88. John P. Marshall was born near New London, Ontario, Canada, In Feb. 1845. At an early age he came to the United States and was employed near Detroit, Mich. In 1871 he came to Black River Falls, Wis., and was employed on Black River as a woodsman.

In Oct. 1872 he took up a homestead near Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) and was one of the first settlers in north Clark County.

Christmas Day, 1873, he was united in marriage to Elsie Carpenter at Greenwood, Wis. To this union eight children were born, four of which preceded him in death. Two died in infancy. David lived to be five years old and Dima (Mrs. Claude Miller) died a the age of 46.

Among us all he ranked always as a man of culture, refinement, sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted father and a true friend, and withal a man of heroic mould in bravely meeting the stern requirements and disappointments of life.
Besides an aged wife who resides in Winifred, Mont., he leaves to mourn, fourteen grandchildren, three daughters, Mrs. Newton Bobb of Ashland, Wis., Mrs. Paul Kendall, of Winifred, Mont., Mrs. Beatrice Horn of Windham, Mont., and one son, Percy Marshall of Thorp, with whom he made his home for the past twenty years.

     Mary was the youngest out of 11 children born to Lee Martin (1855-1928) and May Myrtie Colburn (1860-1952) on Mar 22, 1902 in Plainfield, Washington, Vermont. Mary married Kenneth Chedel Hodgkins on Apr 7, 1924 in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont. Mary & Kenneth had 2 sons, John Robert born May 8, 1925 in Randolph, Orange, Vermont and Guy Stanley Hodgkins born Feb 4, 1936 in Milford, Hampden, Massachusetts and died Oct 21, 1936 in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts. Mary work for over 25 years as an Accountant with Montgomery Wards Co. in many States (Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey). Mary died on Jan 9, 1988 in Barre, Washington, Vermont.
