Words from Gene Bellamy:
The very first time I saw Garfield and his lovely devoted wife Retha was one December 17, 1934 when they came to my house in Mansville, Virginia, a small community in southwest Virginia. The occasion was the death of my father, John M. Bellamy. I was 19 years old, and on May 5, 1935 I was hired as a bookbinder at Kingsport Press in Kingsport, Tennessee where I worked just across the aisle from Garfield who was also an employee. these events were the beginning of a long relationship with Garfield and his family. I left the press on September 25, 1945 and went to work at Rand-McNally in Hammond, Indiana and on one of my visits back to Kingsport, I was going on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky when I saw Garfield and his brother Raymond who were ridding motorbikes. I recognized Garfield and I stopped and talked to Garfield. I told him where I worked and the address, and two weeks later I received a letter from Garfield wanting to know if I cold get him a job. I talked to my supervisor, he agreed to give him a job, he moved his family to Meyer Manor in Cedar Lake ad our families have enjoyed many fellowships together.
