Elwin Clinton Ness, 90, of Billings passed away on July 5, 2015 at Billings Health & Rehabilitation. He was born the son of Clayton and Lucille Ness on May 11, 1925, in Sturgis, S.D.

Elwin met the love of his life, Virginia Cornell, when she was 10 years old and he was 11. They married in Billings on September 14, 1946. This September would have been their 69th wedding anniversary. Elwin and Virginia had three sons Robert, DeWayne and Gregory.

Elwin served with the United States Navy for 3 years. He then began his 52 year career in Law Enforcement which included 20 years with the Billings Police Department where he retired as Captain in 1968. He then went to work as a Juvenile Probation Officer for Yellowstone Juvenile Probation in Billings for 20 years, retiring in 1988. His final law enforcement career was a Customs Agent at Billings Logan International Airport for 12 years, where he finally retired in 2002.

In Elwin’s younger years, he enjoyed square dancing, hunting and fishing with his boys, bowling, golfing, playing cards and family dinners. He especially enjoyed spending time at the “Police Cabin” on the Stillwater outside of Absarokee, where he took his family when they were young and eventually his extended family which included grandchildren. There would always be a game of horseshoes, followed by good food and a game of cards. He also enjoyed the weekly Monday morning coffee at one of the casinos in Billings with his retired law enforcement buddies.

In 2011, he became ill and was admitted to Billings Health & Rehabilitation where he spent his final years. He looked forward to his 3 sons visiting him every morning for a game of Dominos. The highlight of his day was when his wife came to visit every afternoon and they would enjoy a game of Bingo, Pokeno or have a dish of ice cream together. His eyes lit up when she walked in the room and he would always say “Hi Babe, do I get a kiss?”

He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will also be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was always willing to give a helping hand when there were remodeling or painting projects to be completed.

Elwin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Ness; his sons DeWayne (Cindy) Ness and Gregory Ness; Brother Vernon (Myrna) Ness; Sister LaVetta (Elmer) Halvorson; Sister-in-Law Sharon Mai; Grandchildren Rochelle Ness, Jeremy Ness, Tamera (Rich)Walter, Chad (Anita) Ness, Allan (Sara) Ness and David (Holly) Ness; 5 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Elwin was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Lucille; his eldest son Robert Ness; In-Laws Robert and Mae Cornell; Brother-in-Law Robert Cornell Jr; Sister-in-Law Jean Bornes; and Brother-in-Law Gene Mai.

In the spring of 1999 LaVetta met Elmer Halvorson and at the age of 74 they were married Dec. 8, 2001. Elmer was the love of her life and favorite card player. Both enjoyed a good game of Cribbage and Pinochle.

LaVetta owned and operated LaVetta's Beauty Shop and the Billings Answering Service. She was a loving mother who loved her family and friends. Her true joy was fishing and caring for animals, especially stray cats and dogs. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking for her friends and at all family gatherings. LaVetta loved to try out new recipes, decorate and bake cakes, and candy and would make her favorite caramel for those who really had a sweet tooth. She instilled the love of her cooking and baking in her children and grandchildren. LaVetta always had a beautiful, joyous and willing to do anything spirit, ready for whatever next adventure caught her fancy.

Waiting in heaven are her father, mother, brother Elwin, son-in-law Gary Pickering, daughter-in-law Louise Schmaing, and granddaughter Noell Pickering.
