Widow of Judge Potts has tragic death at age 81, long a resident here - Mary Ophelia Potts, widow of Judge Alpheus Potts, of this village died at her home on Thursday afternoon June 19 age 81 years.
Death was due to shock received from a fall on the stairs in her home that morning.
The accidental fall was probably due to the partial blindness from cateracts which have affected her eyesight the past several years and for which she underwent operations a couple of years ago.
Lincoln Chapter No 468, Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was a member, held a service at the home on Sunday evening, June 22.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, June 23m, at the Methodist Episcopal church in this village with Rev. T H Foxton, her former pastor, and Rev. Chas. Harder, the present pastor, officiating.
Burial in the family plot in the cemetery adjoining the church, with Brand and Son in charge.
Only daughter of John B and Emmarina Dutcher and was born in the town of Fallsburgh on March 2 1849.
At the death of her mother one and one half years later she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Granville Porter, who was well known as a hotel keeper and who established the Mansion House in this village.
She was educated in the public schools and graduated from the Monticello Academy and then taught school for 3 years.
In 1868 married Alpheus Potts, an attorney of this village.
Soon after their marriage they began housekeeping in the house which has been her home for 62 years.
Three sons were born: Arthur, who was drowned in the Callicoon creek at the age of four and a half; Theron, who was admitted to the bar and was later appointed district superintendent of education for the Island of Porto Rico; he died the day after his arrival home to attend his father's funeral; and Luther, who is employed in the post office of this village as rural carrier.
In 1870 Mrs Potts united with the Presbyterian church, later transferred her membership to the Methodist church in this village, in which she has been an active and tireless worker.
She was one of the organizers of the Union Sunday school, which was for some years held in the old school building.
She helped organize the Union Chapel corporation and was a tireless worker in the erection and maintenance of the building for ?Sunday school purposes.
Surviving her are her son Luther and his son Edgar.
She leaves the following half sisters and brothers - Mrs Ida Furman of Roscoe, Theodore Dutcher of Galeton, Pa; John Dutcher of Livingston Manor, Floyd Dutcher of Roscoe, Mrs Hattie Simpson of Livingston Manor and Mrs May Duncom of Brooklyn.
