Benjamin Jackson Goodwin
M, (31 May 1831 - 8 April 1895)
Benjamin Jackson Goodwin 1831-1895
Benjamin was a physician and a farmer. He was in the practice of homeopathy...was not a graduate of a medical school, according to the 19 April 1887 register of Physicians and Midwives in the Chickasaw County Historical Museum. That register says he was born in New York, that he was certified by the Iowa State Board of Health March 16, 1887 & that his address was c/o Douglas Twp Post Office, Bremer Co, Iowa.
Benjamin may have been born Aug. 4, 1831, as some records show, but his tombstone says he was born 31 March 1831. Some records show them married in Winnebago Co, IL, but the records of Boone Co, IL show them being married in Boone Co 31 March 1856. That discrepancy is no discrepancy at all; actually they are the same. That's because Boone Co was formerly part of Winnebago Co.
The farm they lived on in Douglas Twp was purchased in 1855. It was later owned/occupied by their grandson Jesse M. Goodwin. That farm was at the very NE corner of Sec 4, the NE 4th of the NE qtr of the section. The house was at the NW part of that farm, facing Chickasaw County across the road north. Immediately south of the edge of their farm was the farm of Joseph and Eliza Daddow in 1875. That proximity resulted in some weddings!
The farm Goodwins had in Bremer Co, IA was in the family over 100 yrs...passing from Benj. to his son Jesse, then to Jesse's son Norman who never married and then willed the farm at his death in 1971 to Rev. Garner Armstrong, a cult-like, later discredited religious leader in Pasadena, CA, upsetting his sisters and the rest of the family!
According to Donna (Leaman) Henry who has researched the Goodwin lines, most of the Goodwins were short in physical stature.
Dr Goodwin must have been a Justice of the Peace, too. There is this item in the February 11, 1886 issue of the Waverly, Iowa Waverly Republican: "Feb. 7--Miss Florence Saddler and a gentleman from Manchester by the name of Bushnell were married at the residence of the bride's parents, last Thursday, Mr. B. J. Goodman officiating."
Dr Goodwin died at 1:00 AM. His funeral was the following Wednesday at 1:30 PM at the Greenwood School House.
The Bradford Museum near the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa has an old "Register of Physicians and Midwives," in which B. J. Goodwin signed in in his own handwriting, on April 19, 1887, stating that he was age 56, practiced Homeopathy, was a native of New York, resided at Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa and Douglas Twp., Bremer County, Iowa, had practiced Homeopathy about 16 years, all those years having been in Iowa, and that his Certificate from the Iowa Board of Health to practice was dated March 16, 1887, and in the column titled "Name of Medical College" he simply wrote "Not a graduate." Benjamin was a homeopathic physician in the Nashua, Iowa area.
His was the most northern homestead, in Bremer County, Iowa.
His medical kit is reportedly on display in the Chickasaw County Historical Museum, Nashua, Iowa.

Lyman Loomis Goodwin

Lyman Loomis Goodwin 1834-1913
The Minnesota Adjutant General's Office card index to Minnesota Civil War soldiers says: Lyman L. Goodwin, private, residence Olmstead County, born NY, enlisted 7/28/1862 at Rochester, MN, mustered in at Ft. Snelling 11/20/1862, Co. H. 6th Minn. Vol. Inf., honorably discharged for disability, 7/31/64, Fort Ridgely, MN. An Olmstead County history refers to L. L. Goodwin as "poundmaster" for the city of Rochester, 1861-2. An everyname index in the Minnesota 1860 census gives two Goodwin families in Olmstead County: In Rochester, ref 004: Caroline, Ida, Lilly, Simon and Spencer Goodwin. (but no Lyman) In Kalmer Twp, ref 065: Amelia, Benjamin, Crissianna and Humprey Goodwin. (Again--no Lyman.)
His marrige to Caroline Bending is listed both as Aug 29, 1854 and Aug 30, 1950. So who knows? Both are from presumably reliable records. The Goodwin diary says it was 1854.
Lyman was a stonemason. His military service was in the Civil War, in Pvt. H. Co., 6th Minnesota Infantry, July 28, 1862 through July 31, 1864.
There is some confusion about where Lyman and wife Carrie are interred. According to records and gravestone, they were buried at Kalama IOOF Cemetery in Kalama, Washington. And yet, the urn niche for their son Spencer lists also his parents. Reportedly Carrie and Lyman's remains were disinterred from Kalama IOOF cemetery and put in Spencer's urn in Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Cemetery, Portland, OR.
