Charles L. Chapman died at the home of his son, Oscar B. Chapman of this village, July 20th after an illness of 18 months. He was the son of Willard and Patty Stone Chapman and was born in Cassville, October 2, 1838. Since his retirement from agricultural pursuits, forty-five years ago, he had spent his summers at Fourth Lake and the winters in this vicinity. Until he suffered a stroke he had been very well and active, and when nearly a nonagenarian, had climbed Bald Mountain. December 25, 1860, he married Mercy S. Tompkins of Paris. In 1922 they celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Mr. Chapman was a member of the Baptist church at Cassville and for forty-five years served as deacon. He is survived by four sons, Oscar B. Herbert of Cassville, Harry of Pittsburgh and Wallace of Clayville, by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral was held in Clayville Monday afternoon.. He was buried at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, at Clayville, Oneida County, NY, USA.

She died on 20 September 1914 at Paris Twp, Oneida County, NY, at age 73.1,2 She was buried at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, at Clayville, Oneida County, NY, USA.

     The 1870 census of Paris, Oneida Co., NY finds her with her husband Charles Hotchkin and son Walter, she is called Mariah in this census. In her Will she says that her son is Walter J. and her name is given as Annie M. Hotchkin; which would be a reversal of her first and middle names. This Will recognizes niece's Grace Chapman and Annie Chapman. The Paris Town Clerk furnished her birth and death dates to the Compiler. In 1891 she is the Grantee of property from Silas Clarke, 4 May 1891, Libr 488, pg 220 and on 22 August 1892 she is the grantee of property from Reuben Tower, Libr 496, pg 233.

Reuben Carlos Chase

     Reuben Carlos Chase was born on 1 February 1835 at Maryland, Otsego County, NY, USA. He was the son of Samuel Buffington Chase and Lydia D. Spencer. Reuben Carlos Chase died on 10 January 1916 at Saint Paul, Ramsey County, MN, USA, at age 80. Married Julia Anna Houghton on 30 September 1862 in Vernon, Clinton County, Iowa.

Had a very interesting life, after attaining his basic education in the common school of the time. Furthered his education and eventually taught in the Cooperstown Seminary in Cooperstown, New York. For a time he also taught and was the principal in the Unadilla school.

Enlisted initially into the 3rd New York Volunteer Cavalry and was in Co. D. Enlisted in Schenevus He was discharged due to health issues on 7 April 1862 in Washington D.C. Returned to New York, married and regained his strength. He re-enlisted into the 1st New York Engineers in Norwich, New York on 29 August 1864 and was placed in Co. E. Initially was a private but attained the rank of corporal. Mustered out with unit on 30 June 1865 in Richmond, Virginia.

He re-located his family to Kansas where he was not only a teacher once more, but in 1870 was elected County Superintendent of the public school system and served for three terms. Served as township clerk, was a trustee of the Morrill Public Library.Member of the G.A. R. Post #108 (Knowlton) member of the Hiawatha Lodge #83, I.O.O.F., Star of Hop0e Lodge # 1338.

He applied for his military pension on 20 September 1875.

He established a 25 acre fruit orchard and raised nursery stock from it of various fruits. Also built green houses and had a good business established from them.
