Services for Clarence Burrus

Funeral services for Clarence W. Burrus, Sr., of Caledonia, native of Livonia., were held at the family home last Saturday afternoon, with burial in Union cemetery, Livonia. He died suddenly last week Wednesday (Apr. 20, 1949). The Rev. D, C. MacLeod officiated.

Clarence Burrus was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elkanah Burrus who, with their family, lived for many years on South Spring street.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Pennock Burrus; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Mader of Canandaigua, Mrs. Edna Sipple of Ontario, Mrs. Dorothy Bancroft of Lima; one son, Clarence Willard Burrus, Jr., of Caledonia; one sister, Mrs. Mildred Figler of Caledonia, four grandchildren.. Services for Clarence Burrus

Funeral services for Clarence W. Burrus, Sr., of Caledonia, native of Livonia., were held at the family home last Saturday afternoon, with burial in Union cemetery, Livonia. He died suddenly last week Wednesday (Apr. 20, 1949). The Rev. D, C. MacLeod officiated.

Clarence Burrus was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elkanah Burrus who, with their family, lived for many years on South Spring street.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Pennock Burrus; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Mader of Canandaigua, Mrs. Edna Sipple of Ontario, Mrs. Dorothy Bancroft of Lima; one son, Clarence Willard Burrus, Jr., of Caledonia; one sister, Mrs. Mildred Figler of Caledonia, four grandchildren..

     Dorothy was born at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA, on 16 August 1928. Age 1 2/12 at the 1930 census.. She was the daughter of Clarence Willard Burrus and Ethel Leona Pennock. She married George Howard Bancroft. Dorothy A. Burrus died on 29 February 2016 at Dansville, Livingston County, NY, USA, at age 87. Dorothy Bancroft age 87, passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning February 29, 2016, at the home of her daughter Nancy in Dansville.

She was born in Rochester on August 16, 1928, a daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel (Pennock) Burrus. On August 17, 1946, she was married to George H. Bancroft Jr., who predeceased her on November 29, 2015. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Mila Reinholtz, a sister Mary Mader and her step-father Annis Webster.

Dorothy was a farmer's wife and was active in the day to day activities of the George Bancroft Farm, she was also a homemaker and a USDA Field Enumerator for many years. She was the former treasurer of the Western NY Sheep and Wool Growers Association, She was active with the 4H and the NYS "Make it Yourself Wool Contest." She was a former member of the Ossian Ladies Aide, the Ossian Grange, the Home Bureau, and the Fawcett Post of the American Legion Auxiliary of Canaseraga.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Kathleen (John) Nagle and Nancy (John) Reinholtz, both of Dansville, Charles (Theresa) Bancroft, of Ossian, Phyllis (James) DiSalvo, of Mt. Morris, Brian (Ruth) Bancroft, and Ed (Judy) Bouffard, both of Canaseraga; siblings, Edna (Charles) Hejl, Ontario, and Clarence (Sharon) Burrus of Groveland, twenty grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in Wood Cemetery in the Town of Ossian.

     Robert Cady Burt was a professional scientist and inventor with a PhD in physics. He had patents on a chemical mixing apparatus, a compressed air powered automobile, the Beltone movie theater sound system, aircraft instrumentation, and more. He was already living in Pasadena, California in 1923 and working as a teacher when he went back east to marry Eleanor Crehore Bedell on June 19, 1923 in Sage Chapel at Cornell University. Later he worked as a consulting engineer, and owned his own laboratory and manufacturing company. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. and lived near the Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena.

Bob and Eleanor had a son named Frederick Bedell Burt. Robert's father was Harry E. Burt, an executive at the Postum plant where Post Cereal Co. made their famous coffee substitute. Robert and his second wife, Adeline Nordendahl Hirsh, were married in Los Angeles on September 4, 1982 when she was 82 and he was 85.

In 1980 Dr. Burt tried to market his compressed air car invention, which he had first built in 1932. As a young man his hip had been crushed in an auto accident so was unable to serve in World War I. His father was an auto enthusiast and a prominent pillar of the famous company where he worked.

     Lenora is buried in Corwin Cemetery, Newfane, NY with her husband Leon. Her daughter, Caralyn says, "Mother was a talented person. She sewed our clothes, painted and wallpapered her own house, could fix or mend all kinds of things and loved to read. Mother grew and sold beautiful flowers and they had all kinds of vegetables and fruit."
