John Bishop married Anne ( ) [Stevens written in] who died April 1676. Lived in Guildford, Conn. 1639. John died Feb 1661.. John Bishop died on 7 February 1661/62 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA. He was buried at Village Green, at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.
In the latter part of April 1639, twenty-five men with their families took passage in the vessel St. John, Captain Russel commanding, which sailed from London in search of a home in the new world. these families were members of Rev. Henry Whitfield's company, nearly all of whom came from counties Surrey, Sussex and Kent, England. At sea, on June 1, 1639, twenty-five members of the company signed a covenant, the original copy of which is in the Harvard College Library.
Whitfiel's ministry had become "obnoxious to Archbishop Laud and other church men". He gave up his position in the national church of his native land and with kindred spirits found freedom of religion in the new world.
The destination for these men and their families was Quinnipiac, now known as New Haven, Connecticut, where they arrived about the tenth of September. Away upon the wide and stormy sea, out of sight of England, from which most of them had parted forever, they began to feel more thoroughly their mutual dependence upon each other and the necessity of keeping their little company unbroken, and accordingly, after having been about ten days on their voyage, they drew up and signed their plantation covenant, pledging to stand by and not desert each other in the new land in which they were about to enter. The following is a copy of the covenant.
"We, whose names are undersigned, intending by God's gracious permission to plant ourselves in New England and if it may be, the the southern part, about Quinnipiac, we do faithfully promise to each other for ourselves and our families and those that belong to us, set down and join ourselves together in one coon entire plantation, and to be helpful each to the other in any common work according to every man's ability, and as need shall require, and we promise not to desert or leave each other, or the plantation but with the consent of the rest of the greater part of the company who have entered into this agreement. As to our gathering together, in that way, we do refer ourselves until such time as it will please God to settle us in our destination. In witness whereof we subscribe our names this first day of June, 1639. Robert Kitchell, John Bishop, Frances Buschnell, William Chittenden, William Lette, Thomas Jones, John Gordon, William Stone, John Hoadley, John Stone, William Plane, Robert Guttridge, John Housego, William Dudly, John Mepham, Thomas Norton, Henry Witfield, Abraham Cruttenden, Frances Chatfield, William Halle, Thomas Naish, Henry Kingsnorth, Henry Doude, Thomas Cooke, John Permerly"
John Bishop was the second to sign the covenant. "We was one of the most prominent men in the colony and appears to have been a citizen of stable and trustworthy quality of character; a public servant whose faithfulness and good judgement could be dependant upon" (Benton Genealogy)
"My fathers and brethren, this is never to be forgotten, that our New England is originally a plantation for religion and not a plantation of trade".
Only four persons were trusted with Civil Power; Robert Kitchell, William Chittenden, John Bishop and William Lette. These families landed at Quinnipiac about the tenth of September and remained there until arrangement had been made for their settlement at the Indian Village of Menunkatuck, about sixteen miles east of Quinnipiac, which latter place had been settled by a colony from England the previous year.
Three different tribes of Indians laid claim to the land an Menunkatuck and the company was therefore obliged to purchase these land from each tribe; Shampishuh, the Sachem Squaw of a branch of a tribe tributary to the Mohawks on Sept 20, 1642 and from Uncus, chief of a branch of the Mohegan tribe on Dec. 17, 1641.
On the 29th of September, 1639, at a meeting held in a barn in Quinnipiac, it was agreed that the six planters in whose manes the deed for the lands should be drawn would be Henry Whitfield, Robert Kitchell, William Chittenden, John Bishop, and William Lette. "And it also agreed that the civil power of the administration of the preservation of peace shall be and remain in the hands of Robert Kitchelll, William Chittenden, John Bishop and William Lette".
It will be seen from these extract of the proceedings of this meeting that John Bishop, our ancestor, was made a trustee of this community land and also a justice of the peace, which offices he held until a church was organized four years later to take over these offices, thus uniting church and state.
A church was formed June, 163, which took over the civil duties of the for persons above mentioned. At the same time the following action was taken; "We do not, therefor, all and everyone of us. order and include that only such persons. as are members of the church here shall be 'freemen' and that such freemen shall have the power to elect magistrates, deputies, and all other offices of public trust and responsibility". this church was of the congregational denomination and it will be seen from the above action that none but members of that church could exercise political rights, as we consider them now.
A month or so after this church was formed, the colony joined the New Haven colony, at which time the name of the plantation was changed from Menunkatuck to Guilford, supposedly named for Guilford, England.
It is believed that the birthplace of John Bishop was England. He brought with him his wife and several children. He was a farmer by occupation and owned a large tract of land in Menunkatuck, besides his hoe lot of seven acres. He was not made a "freeman" until 1647. He was about fifty years old when he came to America as he had five grandchildren born to him before he came to America. He was a prominent and useful citizen, was one of the trustees for the purchase of the land fro the Indians and quite often mentioned in the town records (p449) and Guilford records (booa A, p185). His exact birth date is not known and the exact maiden name of his wife is not known, nor is the date and place of her birth. He died in 1660. Anne died at the home of her son-in-law, James Steele, in Hartford, Connecticut, April 1676. The children of this couple were Mary, who married George Hubbard, died Sept. 14 1675, Anne who married John Gordon, then Thomas Clarke, died Jan 3, 1672. John who married Susannah Goldham, died October 1683. Bethia who married James Steele, died January 1676. Stephen who married Tabatha Wilkinson, died June 1660 and Sarah who married George Chatfield, died September 30, 1657.

Mary Bishop
F, (28 September 1652 - 1 November 1703)
Mary Bishop was born on 28 September 1652 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.1 She was the daughter of John Bishop Jr. and Susannah Goldham. She married John Hodgkin at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, on 4 April 1670. Guilford Vital Records, married by William Leete..2,3 She married Isaac Johnson at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, on 16 July 1682.4 She married Unknown Field at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, in 1687.5 Mary Bishop died on 1 November 1703 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, at age 51. She was buried at Village Green, at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.
The marriage of Mary Bishop and John Hodgkin was performed by William Leete and is recorded in Guilford Vital Records. Based on the date that John became a Freeman, he must have been at least 37 years old at the time of his marriage. This seems an unusually old age for a first marriage, but no earlier marriage has been found.
Mary Bishop was the daughter of John Bishop Jr. and Susannah Golham. Her fraternal grandfather, John Bishop, was a signer of the Guilford Covenant and her maternal grandfather, Henry Goldham, may also have been a signer, as he was known to be in Guilford in 1648, but due to "defects in the records" some signers are not known. After the death of John, Mary married twice again. First, on 16 July 1682 to Isaac Johnson and second, after the death of Isaac to Mr. Field on 28 October 1687. Records show widow "Marah" giving John's land to sons Joseph and Thomas.6
