John Kelly was born in Roscommon County, Ireland on April 9, 1843.
The Kelly family were tenant farmers to Sir Walter Burke. They occupied what's called the Herds House in the Townland of Carrownageeloge near Oran Tower in the Civil Parrish of Oran. Their farm consisted of 185 acres of land, part of an estate owned by Sir Henry Coote whose grandfather had conquered the County during the Jacobite Wars. Sir Walter Burke apparently leased the land from Coote and the tenant farmers worked for Burke. The Herds House is still standing.
In 1869 he came to America on the Inman Line of Royal Mail Steamers. Ship's name was the City of Antwerp, a new ship. Prices for the ship first class $105, second class $85, third class was $75 and steerage was $30. He left behind his widowed father, George (age 46) , two sisters, Bridget and Ann, undetermined ages and a brother, Charles age 15. When he arrived in America he worked for the railroads and traveled west to Iowa where he then purchased 160 acres under the Homestead Act in Grinnell, Iowa. He married Martha (Mattie) Ann Hotchkin in 1880. They had 5 childern, 3 girls and two boys. Mary, 1881; George, 1882; Mattie, 1884; Charlie, 1888; and Lucy, 1892. Martha Ann Hotchkin's parents had immigrated from England (father) and Ireland (mother) prior to John Kelly arriving. She was born in New York.
