Hartshorne, Okla., Aug. 4 --(Special)-- In the presence of his wife and seventeen-year-old daughter, Bebe, Dr. B. B. Owens, a prominent physician of Hartshorne, shot himself twice Sunday morning, dying an hour later without regaining consciousness and without making any statement as to why he wanted to die. The instrument used was a 38-calibre revolver. According to the wife, Dr. Owens seemed in the best of spirits when he arose Sunday morning. He dressed himself and going to the dresser, picked up his revolver and shot himself through the left side. The bullet ranged downward, but failed to reach a vital spot, going through the body and inflicting a flesh wound in the thigh of his daughter who was standing near. With her screams of pain and those of his wife, who yet was in bed, ringing in his ears, he raised the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger a second time, falling in a heap. He died within an hour. The wound to the girl is said to be not dangerous. Owens formerly was a resident of Hartshorne and then went to Oklahoma City for a while, having returned only a few weeks ago. It is thought financial matters caused this action. He leaves a wife and three children, was an intermarried Chickasaw citizen and owned 900 acres of land scattered through that nation.
(The Daily Oklahoman, Aug. 5, 1912). He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, at Hartshorne, Pittsburg County, OK, USA.
