William Walker Fitts (b. 1842 in Madison County, GA) was the second of eight children. He married Elizabeth "Eliza" J. Bond (b. 10 March 1837; d. 20 June 1906) They had one child, John Franklin Fitts (b. 5 Mar. 1861 Madison County GA)

During the summer of 1861, William Walker Fitts volunteered for service in the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army. The ten companies of the 16th Georgia Volunteers were raised in the counties of Madison, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Jackson, and Hart. William Walker was assigned to Company D also known as the Danielsville Guard.

The 16th Georgia was sent to Virginia and assigned to General Howell Cobb's, T.R.R. Cobb's, Wofford's, and Dubose's Brigade. It fought in McGruder's Peninsular Campaign; then with McLaws Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Gettysburg; then moved with Longstreet but was not engaged in the fight at Chickamauga. After serving at Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Fort Sanders, the 16th Georgia returned to Virginia and participated sustained heavy casualties at the Wilderness and the "Bloody Angle" at Spotsylvania Courthouse.
