James Hervey Hotchkin Rev.1,2,3,4

M, (23 February 1781 - 21 September 1851)
Rev. James Hervey Hotchkin
James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. was born on 23 February 1781 at Cornwall, Litchfield County, CT, USA. According to the History of Cornwall by Starr, Joseph was baptised on 27 Oct 1782 in Cornwall. He was the son of Beriah Hotchkin Rev. and Thankful Dickinson. James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. was graduated in 1800 from Williams College, Williamstown, Berkshire County, MA, USA. He married Rebecca Hall at Presbyterian Church, Greenville, Greene County, NY, USA, on 16 September 1804. James’ father, Rev Beriah Hotchkin, married them..5 James Hervey Hotchkin Rev. appeared on the census of 1820 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: James H. Hochkin, 3 males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 26. This doesn't seem to fit the family as we know it. Compiler believes that the problem is the layout of the census form.. He died on 21 September 1851 at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, at age 70. Age 71 according to cemetery records.. He was buried at Prattsburgh Pioneer Cemetery, at Prattsburgh, Steuben County, NY, USA.

James Hervey Hotchkin was born at Cornwall, CT on 23 February 1781 and graduated from Williams College in 1800, at the age of 19. He started preaching in West Bloomfield, NY in 1801, and in 1802 he returned to Greenville and was ordained as an evangelist. He returned to West Bloomfield and was installed as minister of the Presbyterian Church on 19 May 1803. He left the West Bloomfield church when the church voted to, cease payment of any salary to Mr. Hotchkin after the last Sunday of March 1809. The church body decided that a minister was to work like any man during the week to provide for his family. They said that it was not necessary to study or prepare for the Sunday sermon, because as a Minister of God, the words would come at the proper time. He then went to Prattsburg, NY and was installed there on 16 Aug 1809 and left on 27 Jan 1830. During this time he brought more than 200 new members into the church. James went next to Hector and was installed on 20 April 1830 and left there on 5 February 1833 to take a position in Centre Wheeler on 17 September 1833. In April of that same year he moved to Campbell, Chemung Co., NY and filled the pulpit of that Presbyterian church, until April 1839. In the spring of 1840, he took the pulpit of the church at Pulteney, where he had occasionally preached earlier. He continued here until the spring of 1843. After that period, he resided mostly at Prattsburg. For one year, beginning in 1845, he preached at Wayne, Steuben Co., NY, twothirds of the time. After 1847 he preached occasionally at Conhocton. For several previous years he had spend considerable time on the preparation of his book, History of the Purchase and Settlement of Western New York, which he published in 1848. This book is primarily a history of the Presbyterian Church's growth in New York.
The following inscription is on his grave: "The grave of Rev. James H. Hotchkin born in Cornwall, CT, 23 February 1781. Graduated at Williams College 3 September 1800. Ordained minister of the gospel 13 October 1802. Died at his home in this village, Prattsburg, 21 September 1851 in the 71st year of his age and in the 51st year of his ministry. Mr. Hotchkin was pastor of the Presbyterian Church of this town from 18091830. As a scholar he was profound, as a preacher he was able and instructive, as a pastor devoted and faithful, as a Christian sincere and humble. The church and society, so long in the charge of the deceased, join his family in erecting this monument to departed worth."
It is possible that he visited his son Augustine in Saline MI because the Presbyterian Church records in Saline, MI show a Mr. Hotchkin as a visiting minister or moderator on 5 August 1849.
His Will was filed as Case #5231, Bk 5, p 196 with his wife Rebecca as Executor. The Will was witnessed by Thomas Aulls, Hiram Aulls, Albert Wilcox, William Murray, Abigail Murray and Sarah A. Miller. It listed as heirs, sons, Beriah B., James H., Augustin H., John N., Samuel, deceased son William H., and grandson Samuel, son of William. A special guardian, Ansel J. McCall, is named for grandson Samuel. The total estate was valued at $143.75. Elsie Moon has commented that the estate value was largely in 400 copies of his book valued at $.60 each. For his first four years in Prattsburg a room in his small dwelling was occupied by a few students. This group was the beginning of the Franklin Institute, now a sizable educational facility near Prattsburg.
