Text: Matthews --Mrs. Mary Etta Matthews, widow of Elder Wallace Reuben Matthews, was born October 2, 1869, [1] at Ypsilanti, Michigan, and passed away at the home of her daughter, [2] May 3, 1949. Her husband who died in 1925, served the ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Michigan for 43 years. [3] She was the daughter of William Clark, a pioneer railroader, and his wife, Lovisa, an early Adventist mission worker.[4] On November 5, 1885, she and Wallace Reuben Matthews were united in holy wedlock. To this union were born two children. [5] She had been a member of the church for 67 years [6] and an active worker in the Dorcas Society of the Tabernacle since coming to Battle Creek in 1916. [7] Surviving are the daughter, Grace B. Schwartz of Battle Creek, the son, William W. Matthews of Stanwood, Michigan; a foster son, Jack Matthews of Battle Creek, ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; one niece, several cousins and many more remoted relatives in New York state. Words of comfort were spoken by Elder S.E. Wight, assisted by Elder Merle L. Mills.

     The 1910 census is really confusing. The census taker writes that William has 2 children, 2 living and that Marietta has 2 children, 2 living; however, there are 3 children listed. It is likely that this means that they each had former marriages.

The census lists the family as: William Clark, 63, railroad engineer, born MD, father born MD, mother born VA; wife Lovisa, 55, born NY, parents born CT; dau Mary, 15, born MI.. He died on 30 September 1906 at Mancelona, Antrim County, MI, USA, at age 87.¹

     The children's names came from a note of sister Marietta in the Hotchkin Reunion files, but the 1910 census says that Louvisa had only 2 children of which the Compiler knows Etta Mary was one of the two. The 1900 census says that she had 6 children of whom 2 were living at that time.

     Alice May Clarke was born on 13 July 1874 at Plainfield, Otsego County, NY, USA. She married Earnest Clarence Edwards at Unadilla Forks, Otsego County, NY, USA, on 13 February 1895. Alice May Clarke died on 23 November 1897 at DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY, USA, at age 23. She was buried at Fayetteville Cemetery, at Fayetteville, Onondaga County, NY, USA.
