Margaret Josephine Smith Hotchkin, Compilers mother
Margaret Josephine Smith was born on 18 July 1901 at Pleasant View Twp, Emmet County, MI, USA.1 She was the daughter of Edgar Almiron Smith and Catherine Rosena Witherell. She married Franklin Elwyn Hotchkin at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI, USA, on 30 June 1920. A cousin gave 30 June 1919 to LDS, which is an error. The Compiler holds their Marriage License showing a 1920 marriage.. Margaret Josephine Smith died on 16 July 1990 at Odessa, Ector County, TX, USA, at age 88.2,3 She was buried at Andrews County Cemetery West, at Andrews, Andrews County, TX, USA.

The Compilers mother, Margaret Josephine Smith and Franklin Elwyn Hotchkin were married on the 30th day of June 1920 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just 16 days before her death. Mother always claimed another middle name of Lafame but it is not recorded on her birth certificate. Dad said that it was love at first sight after he was introduced to mother at the telephone company in Harbor Springs, and that he knew immediately that he would marry her. Her death occurred at 7:30 P.M., July 16, just 2 days before her 89th birthday. She died at Medical Center Hospital, Odessa, TX of fluids on the lungs caused by many strokes over the previous two years. We buried mother on a rainy morning in the small city cemetery of Andrews, TX, a town that they first moved to when they went to Texas, following their son Jerrold. Her funeral was held in the Singleton Funeral Home in that city.
Mother had a "saying" that bothered Brother Jerry and I very much. As teen-ager when we went out in the evening she always repeated, "Remember that you are a Hotchkin".
