WAS ESTEEMED RESIDENT OF VERONA FOR 36 YEARS.
Death Was Caused by Arterial Sclerosis—Was Born in Pulteney, Steuben County, 80 Years Age — Was a Retired Successful Farmer.
Verona, Oct. 2. — Charles H. Prentiss, an old resident of this town, died at his home a half mile east of Verona at 1 o'clock this morning. He was confined to his bed about 10 days but arterial sclerosis, the disease which caused his death, had been making serious inroads on his ordinarily strong constitution for some time. He was born in Pulteney, Steuben county on January 14, 1832, and lived in that vicinity until 36 years ago when he removed to this town, where he has since resided. He was a farmer by occupation and was always a hard working man until two or three years ago when he gave up active work and since then has enjoyed a well earned rest. He was of a very retiring disposition, finding his pleasures in his own home and among his own people and was respected by all who knew him. Mr. Prentiss's wife died 27 years ago. He is survived by one daughter Miss Cora Prentiss, who lived with her father; also by one brother George. and four sisters Mrs. Sarah Bacon, Mrs. Francis Geulick and Mrs, Williamette Armstrong of Pulteney and Mrs. Mary Davis of Brockport, Monroe county.
The funeral will be held from the family residence at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Dennis, pastor of the Verona Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Verona cemetery.

     It is likely that she died young as she is not in either the NY 1855 or 1865 census. The family is not found in the federal 1860 census as Josiah is listed alone. Mother Hannah is listed at a separate location but Edith A is not listed with the other children.

She is survived by her husband John A Coryell of Pulteney. a daughter Mrs Frances Elizabeth Putnam of Prattsburg. three brothers Leonard C, Willard A and Edward M all of Pulteney. and two grandsons,John and Arthur Putnam of Prattsburg. Another brother, Guy Prentiss, died seven years ago. Interment was in Glen View Cemetery.. She was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

She married Frank Gibson at NY, USA, on 13 February 1901. Fannie Louise Prentiss died on 29 February 1972 at Fayetteville, Onondaga County, NY, USA, at age 91. Memorial services for Mrs. Fannie Louise Gibson, 91, of 123 Fairfield St., Fayetteville, who died February 29 at a local nursing home, were held March 2 in Erwin Methodist Church. Burial will be in Glenview Cemetery, Pulteney, in the spring. A Syracuse area resident 50 years, Mrs. Gibson was a native of Pulteney. She was a member of Erwin Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Howard Speer of Fayetteville, with whom she resided; a granddaughter, Mrs. Lynne Gibson Lovett of Newington, Conn., and a grandson, Gary P. Gibson of Cazenovia. Arrangements by Eaton-Tubbs.

George Stanley Prentissserved during the Civil War. He married Elizabeth Simpson at NY, USA, on 2 December 1868. George Stanley Prentiss appeared on the census of 1880 at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY. The census lists the family as: George S. Prentiss, 36, grape grower, born NY, father born MA, mother born NY; wife E. S. Prentiss, 35, born NY, father born PA, mother born NJ; dau Maud M., 9, born NY.. George died in 1922 at NY. He was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

     George enlisted in the Civil War in August 1862 and was promoted to Sgt and then to 2nd Lt on 1 January 1865. He was severely wounded at Sabine Cross and later his left hand was injured in a collision on the Mississippi river. George was discharged by a surgeon's certificate of disability on 28 March 1865, just a few months short of the full term of his three years enlistment. There is a story that George saw a house in Virginia that he liked and when he returned he had a house like it built on his land on Brown Road in Pulteney. This is the same property that his father had built the log cabin on in 1837.

The death of Guy Prentiss, aged 56, occurred late last Sunday night at the Penn Yan hospital, where he had been since Monday, Aug. 22nd, suffering from a broken vertebra and pelvic bone, the result of a fall. Mr. Prentiss leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, who was formerly Dicie McConnell; a daughter, Mrs. Archie Spangler; a grandson, Guy H. Spangler; a sister, Mrs. John Coryell, and three brothers, Willard, Leonard and Edward, besides many relatives and friends. Funeral Wednesday at the home. Burial in Glen View cemetery.. He was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

     Middle name DeKay given in burial records.

     John Adams Prentiss was born on 31 July 1761 at Lancaster, Worcester County, MA, USA. He was the son of Stanton Prentice Dr. and Rebecca Stevens. John Adams Prentiss was a Private, andserved in John Giles Company, Col Crafts Regt, during the revolutionary War. He married Martha Bridge at Lancaster, Worcester County, MA, on 22 January 1791. John Adams Prentiss appeared on the census of 1800 at Lancaster, Worcester County, MA. The census lists the family as: John Prentiss, 3 males under age 10, 1 male age 10 to 15, 1 male age 25 to 45; 2 female under age 10, 2 female age 16 to 25, 1 female age 26 to 45.. He died on 1 November 1840 at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA, at age 79. In Pultney on Sunday 1st November last, John Prentiss Esq, in the 80th year of his age. Mr Prentiss was a native of Lancaster, Worcester County, Mass. In the early part of his life he went to Vermont as a surveyor, purchased and cleared a farm in the town of Rutland. His health failing, he commenced the mercantile business continuing it for 6-8 years; he then returned to his native place and continued in commercial pursuits until the beginning of the late war, at which time he took final leave of Lancaster, came to this country and purchased the farm in Pultney on which he resided until his death. Interred in the public burying ground of the Presbyterian Society of Pultney, Rev James H Hotchkin performed the service.. He was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

     The name was changed from Prentice to Prentiss at the move to Pulteney in 1813.

He died on 8 May 1878 at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, at age 80.3 He was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

     The John Bridge Genealogy says that John was a grape vineyard farmer in Pulteney, NY. He bought property from his father in 1837 and built a log cabin on it. This property was in the family until 1896. John was the eldest son of Edward and Martha Bridge.3

John Prentiss aged 75 died at his home Thursday morning. He was born in Pulteney. He was married to Mies Delia Parker Sept.18,1867. Besides his wife be leaves five children, Mrs Bertie Case, Mrs Fannie Gibson, Mrs Josephine Brewster of Syracuse, William Prentiss of Baltimore Md and Laverne Prentiss of Pulteney. One daughter, Mrs Stella Whitney, died about 25 years ago. Ho also leaves 7 grandchildren, Elliott and Willford Case, Clifford and Florence Whitney, Ruth (and Marjory Prentiss and Parker Gibson, one brother Wright and one sister Martha Prentiss of Pulteney. He was a veteran of the Civil War.. He was buried at Glenview Cemetery, at Pulteney, Steuben County, NY, USA.

L. L. Prentiss Dies at 67

FUNERAL SERVICES will be at 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the Carl E. Welter funeral home for L. LaVerne Prentiss, 67, associated with The Post-Standard circulation department for 19 years, who died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. Comstock Lincoln of Manlius.

The Rev. Charles H. Schmitz of the Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. today and tomorrow.

Mr. Prentiss, who also served as district circulation manager, had been in failing health for several months. He was the son of John and E. Adelle Prentiss of Pulteney, Steuben County. He came to Syracuse from that village 20 years ago. He had been a member of Prattsburg Lodge 564, F. and A.M.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Richardson Prentiss; two daughters, Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Andrew E. Buff of Manlius; a brother, William W. Prentiss of Pulteney; three sisters, Mrs. George E. Case, Mrs. Albert V. Brewster and Mrs. Frank Gibson of Syracuse; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews..2 He was buried at Greenlawn Memorial Park, at Warners, Onondaga County, NY, USA.
