Shirley Oestreich Carlson, 84, of Duluth, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at home.

She was born Sept. 11, 1924 in Duluth. Shirley was adopted by Carl and Grace Oestreich.

She graduated from Duluth Central High in 1943 and Duluth State Teachers College with a degree in Kindergarten Primary in 1947, and taught for two years before marring Roy Carlson of Escanaba, Mich. in 1949.

Shirley worked for many years in her family's grocery store and was a flower arranger at Wahl's Department Store. She was a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital, and was active for years in string ensembles and song and dance groups-St. Mary's Belles, Inspiration Tap Dancers, Razzle Dazzel Review, Crazy Eights and the Vaudeville Review. She also performed with George Burns at the DECC.

Shirley was a former member of various flower clubs, Lester Park Literary Club, Northland Dinner Dance Club and The Happy Hoedowners Square Dancers.

She is a current member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, St. Mary's Auxiliary, Duluth Womens Club, Lakeside Chapter of Eastern Star and Lester Park AARP.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Roy E. Carlson and son, Daryl R. Carlson both of Duluth; her nieces Sandy Mathees of Red Wing, Minn. and Gracia Rosner of Cannon Falls, Minn.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 in Dougherty Funeral Home, continuing on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery. Memorials to Lakeside Presbyterian Church would be appreciated. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth, 727-3555.
