     He was one of early America's foremost portraitists. In his early years as an artist he was encouraged by the likes of Bass Otis, Charles Wilson Peale, and Thomas Sully. Neagle's work is hung at the Second Bank of the United States/Portrait Gallery in Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution.
