Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin

M, (2 February 1805 - 18 September 1886)
Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin was born, according to conflicting information, on 2 February 1805 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA. This date comes from Seth Hotchkin Bible Records according to Geoffrey Brown, but Jerri Moore in her records says the birth was in 1806. At the 1850 census he was age 53, making the 1806 date most likely. Gravestone caculation would give a 2 feb 1806 date.. He was the son of Seth Hodgkin Dea. and Stata (Stella) Hale. He married Lydia Novill Grant at NY, USA, on 3 October 1827. He married Nancy Leroy at Sullivan County, NY, USA, in 1848. Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Francis, 55, wife Nancy; Horace Johnson, 14; Norman Hotchkins, 10; Ella Johnson, 13, Albert Hotchkins, 10; Nancy Hotchkins, 9/12.. He married Frances (Fanny) May Tompkins at Sullivan County, NY, in 1868. Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin died on 18 September 1886 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, at age 81.1 He was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.1

Joshua Francis is described in Brown, John Hodgkin of Guilford. His birth date comes from Jerrie Moore of San Angelo, TX. The 1855 New York state census of Sullivan Co, NY has Francis's family consisting of Abigail Hotchkin, age 76, widowed, born in CT, lived 30 years in Liberty, (step mother Abigail Hubbell). At the 1860 census of Neversink, Francis's household consists of wife Nancy; Horace Johnson, age 14; Norman Hotchkins, age 13; Ella Johnson, age 13; Albert Hotchkins, age 10; and Nancy Hotchkins, age 9/12. The 1880 Census finds him living in Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY with his third wife Fanny, their daughter Frankie and his grandson Frank W., Nathan's son.
Francis's death is known from his Will, dated 3 June 1881, probated 23 May 1887; Surrogate Court records, Book 9, pg 572, Sullivan Co. This Will names wife Fanny Tompkins Hotchkins, daughter Frankey T. Hotchkins, grandson Frank W. Hotchkins, and Elias Chamlain. Francis's son William Mead claimed that the Will was coerced and asked to have it overturned based on his fathers incompetence. The transcript of this hearing is dated 23 May 1887 shows that his challenge was rejected. Francis and his first wife Lydia are buried in Hodge's Cemetery near Neversink, NY. Geoffrey Brown says that Hotchkin graves occupies the entire East-most row of the cemetery but excludes Albert and Philena who are elsewhere in the cemetery. Nancy Le Roy Johnson is buried in the same cemetery with her first husband and children; however, her grave is marked "wife of Francis Hotchkin." The Compiler tried to visit this cemetery while he was in Neversink but didn't find out until later that he was in the wrong cemetery.
Brown describes source information which is quoted as follows: "Sources of information include the Bible, census and probate records already cited and the Will of William Mead Hotchkins, Sullivan Co. Will Book 11, pg. 237. (Executor made application January 13 1900)." All full siblings are mentioned by name in the Will with the exception of Ishabeb, George, and Amos (or Emos). Ishabeb comes from the notebook of Helen C. Brown, in an entry captioned "from Augusta Berrian, 10/62." Amos (or Enos) is known of only because of an entry in that name, age 3, identified as "son" of the head of the household in the 1855 New York State census. Bible records from Audrey Carver provide all dates of birth and add George Hotchkin to the list of children. Probate transcript cited above provides additional information and substantiation. The source of much of the information regarding Seth Hotchkin is Donald Lines Jacobus, Hale, House and Related Families. The 1872-73 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Sullivan Co. lists him as a farmer with 75 acres.2,3

Josiah Bacon Hotchkin1,2,3

M, (30 July 1807 - 9 August 1855)
Josiah Bacon Hotchkin was born on 30 July 1807 at Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY, USA.4 He was the son of Eli Hodgkin and Elizabeth (Betsey) Drury. He married Mary Ann Bailey at NY, USA, in 1826. Josiah Bacon Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1830 at Camden, Oneida County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Josiah B. Hotchkiss, 2 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 2 female under 5, 1 female 15 to 20, 1 female 20 to 30.. He married Keziah D. Austin at NY in 1837. Josiah Bacon Hotchkin died on 9 August 1855 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA, at age 48. Cemetery records confirm the Waterville Times obituary..5,4 He was buried at Brookside Cemetery, at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA.6

The Benjamin Cleveland Family Genealogy, by Edmund Janes Cleveland, identifies him as Josiah Bacon Hotchkin, husband of Keziah Auston. He appears in the 1830 census in Camden, Oneida Co as Josiah B. Hotchkiss and in the 1840 census of Watertown as J.B. Hotchin. Oneida Co., NY real estate records show him as the Grantee of property from John Tower and his wife. The 1850 census finds him with his wife and seven children in Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY. His occupation is harnessmaker and he has $2500 of real estate. At this census he is living next door to his brother, Benjamin F. Hotchkin. At the 1860 census he has died and his wife is the head of the household. Records at the Flower Library, 229 Washington St, Watertown, NY, give his death and burial location.
The Oakes Genealogy and Family History of Jefferson Co. says that he first married Mary Ann Oakes and they had four daughters. These four would be Charlotte, Malona, Mary A. and Caroline. The Oakes Genealogy gives his second marriage to Keziah Austin (not Auston) of Norway, Herkimer Co., NY. The Horace Gillette Cleveland, Cleveland Family Genealogy, also identifies Josiah and his second marriage to Kezia Austin. From this marriage, Josiah had two sons and three daughters, Helen, William H., Julia, Emily, and Herbert B. The birth and relationships of all these children are supported by federal censuses. Josiah is listed in several Watertown Directories. The 1840 has him in the saddle business with his brother Benjamin at 10 Clay St. At the 1850 directory he is still at 10 Clay with a home at Clinton St. and the 1855 Directory has him remaining at 10 Clay St. He does not appear in later Directories. Josiah died intestate, according to Jefferson Co. Surrogate Court records, on 9 August 1855 with an estate worth less than $3,000. All eight of his children are mentioned in these records. The probate documents list the children as Charlotte E. Seymoun, wife of George W. Seymoun (the first letter of this name is impossible to be sure of and the name may be Seymour) of Lyme, Huron Co., OH, Malona S. Hotchkins of Watertown, Mary Ann Beutell, wife of Joseph Beutell of Lyme, Huron Co., OH, Caroline Moffat, wife of Joseph N. Moffatt, (note double tt the second time) of Rodman, NY, all of full age. The document goes on to list Helen Hotchkin, William H. Hotchkin, F. Hotchkin, Emily Hotchkin, and Herbert B. Hotchkin of Watertown the four mentioned having no general guardian. Alice Edwards Harris, in her family notes, says that he was called Bacon and married the daughter of a judge. The family was members of the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown and there is a baptism records under the name of Hotchkiss, (Unreadable), Mary Ann, Charlotte and Elizabeth, 1835.
An obituary on Josiah appears in a Waterville, NY newspaper, dated 18 August 1855, saying that he had been born in Waterville and gone to Watertown in 1833. He was a Senior Partner in J.B. & B.F. Hotchkin. He had been on a trip to Terre Haute, IN and was taken sick at the home of a soninlaw near Sandusky and immediately hastened home by railroad, accompanied by his daughter. The obituary says that he leaves a wife, many children and an aged father and mother.2,7

KATHRYN HOTCHKIN CURLE
FEBRUARY 25, 1959 -
JULY 15, 2010

Kathryn Hotchkin Curle, 51, passed quietly in her sleep on July 15th, 2010 at Covenant Hospice Residence, in Pensacola, FL following a long and hard fought battle with cancer. She died just the way she lived, with a grace and dignity beyond description.
Born in Parkersburg, WV February 25th, 1959 she spent most of her childhood in Virginia, graduating from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, VA in 1977. After several years of work, school and travel, she traveled to Pensacola Beach for an extended visit with a longtime friend. During this visit, she charmed her future husband and her and Woody (Walter Woods) Curle were married just one year later, June 16th, 1984. Kathryn then began a career that spanned over ten years, working in Sales and Marketing for local resort hotels until she proudly chose to be a stay at home Mom, a job she cherished more than any other.
She enjoyed supporting her kids in local sports, and you could count on Kath to be on the sidelines, cheering the loudest. Kathryn was active in Pensacola Beach Mardi Gras for many years, and was a founding member of the Krewe of Nerieds and was honored to serve as their Queen in the mid 90's.
She was also an avid horse lover since childhood and owned many horses over the years - her beloved Abby was her final loving ride.
Kathryn is survived by her husband, Woody; children, Haley and Ethan; parents, George and Betty Hotchkin; siblings, Robin Warren (Bob), Susan Rascoe (Billy), and Rick Hotchkin, all of Virginia Beach, VA; mother-in-law, Anne Chance, and Marion Curle; brothers-in-law, Douglas Curle and Shawn Curle; sister-in-law, Candy Phillips (Jerrod); nieces and nephews. Shelley, Sara, Sabra, Shane, Jesse, Christopher, Gerimy, Savannah and Tyler; as well as great-nieces and nephews that she also adored.
A Memorial Service will be held at Lewis Funeral Home on Navarre Parkway on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 1pm, followed by a reception to celebrate Kathryn's life, which will take place immediately following the service at a location to be determined.
The Family wishes to thank the staff at the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice in Pensacola for the compassionate care shown to Kathryn by the entire staff during her time there. Words cannot express the gratitude they feel to these kind caregivers at Hospice, as well to friend Melissa Johnen for her selfless dedication to helping Kathryn on her final journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Kathryn's memory to Covent Hospice of Pensacola.
