Samuel Hodgkin1,2

M, (21 April 1743 - 1799)
Samuel Hodgkin was born on 21 April 1743 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.3 He was the son of Abraham Hodgkin and Hannah Maltby. He married Jerusha Hubbard at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, on 13 January 1768.4,5 Samuel Hodgkin was a Private, andserved in Capt Hands Company, Col. Talcott's Regt., during the Revolutionary War. He appeared on the census of 1790 at Litchfield, Litchfield County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Saml Hotchkins, 1 male sixteen and older, 3 males under 16; 3 females.. He died in 1799 at Dutchess County, NY, USA. Letter sent to son William Hotchkin.

Stanley Harris of Carbondale, IL furnished much of the material on this family branch and Samuel's marriage to Hannah. This material having been previously published by Brown. Samuel was born April 21 1743 at Guilford, per Guilford Vital Records and his parents, Abraham and Hannah Hochkish were members of the Congregational 4th church per NEHGS, V59:66. Jacobus in his appendix of New Haven Families and in a letter in possession of Harris, gives the marriage to Jerusha.
Samuel and Jerusha went to Norfolk in Litchfield Co., CT, where the only actual known record show the birth of three children. A Samuel Hotchkiss also lived in Norfolk, CT during the same time period and your Compiler has often been confused regarding these two individuals when searching the local records, in fact a number of Deeds refer to Samuel and Jerusha Hotchkiss. Talcott and NEHGH claims that he married Mary ( ) and lived in Bradford, CT and had children Mary, Sarah, Hannah and Samuel. NEHGH says that he died in Cornwall, NY.
A Samuel Hodgkins appears in the 1790 Census of Pawling Town, Dutchess Co., NY, with himself, a wife and a male child under the age of 16 years. In the 1800 Census a Samuel Hotchkiss is in Onondaga Co., NY and in the 1810 Census an S. Hotchkins is in Otsego Co., NY; and in 1820 Samuel is in Milford, Otsego Co., NY. It is also known that a Samuel Hotchkin was in Otsego Co., NY in 1807. The Compiler believes that it is likely that only the 1790 individual in Dutchess County is this Samuel and the others are his son Samuel Jr.
According to Bernard Steiner, Samuel served in the Revolutionary War, after Lexington, with Capt. Hand's Co., Col. Talbot’s Regt. along with Beriah, Thomas and an Ira Hotchkin, who hasn't been identified.
The DAR Patriot index 1966 1st Supp. has a Samuel Sr. b.c.1753, d.1-1799, married Eliz. Phelps and a Samuel, born 21 January 1757 and died 4 March 1835, married Chloe Stone. neither seems to be this Samuel. It is likely that these individuals were Hotchkiss and not Hotchkin. William Finch of New Marlborough, MA sold to Samuel Hotchkin a parcel of land in New Marlborough on 16 January 1772/3. At that date, Samuel's address was Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT. Samuel purchased another parcel of land in MA on 17 December 1774 and sold it 15 December 1779 but it is not known where he lived at that time. There is no proof that the family ever lived in MA.

Samuel Hodgkin

M, (5 November 1774 - 14 February 1836)
Samuel Hodgkin was born on 5 November 1774 at Norfolk, Litchfield County, CT, USA.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Hodgkin and Jerusha Hubbard. He married Mary (Polly) Spencer at Maryland, Otsego County, NY, USA, on 20 January 1804.3,4,2 Samuel Hodgkin appeared on the census of 1810 at Milford, Otsego County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: S. Hotchkin, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female 16 to 26.. He died on 14 February 1836 at Maryland, Otsego County, NY, at age 61.4

Samuel was listed in NEHGH, and his birth is recorded in Norfolk, Litchfield Co, CT records as "son of Samuel and Jerusha." Talcott and NEHGR also report his birth. The Vital Records of Norfolk list Samuel, his father and mother but refers to them as Samuel Hotchkiss and Jerusha Hubbard. Ashley Hotchkin said that his father Samuel came to Maryland, NY from Columbia County, NY in 1795. No record of Samuel in Columbia County has been found; however, it is known that George Hodgkin was in that county in 1830.
The first known real estate purchase for Samuel occurred in Otsego County in 1804 when he acquired a property from Mr. N. Rose. In 1813 and 1819 he made deals with H. Palmer, G. Wilcox, and J. Edison. His first sale of property was in 1807 when he sold to N. Rose; followed later from 1811 to 1817 with sales to R. F. Cooper, I. Cooper, and S. Palmer.5

Seth Hodgkin Dea.

M, (1 May 1776 - 11 February 1848)
Seth Hodgkin Dea. was born on 1 May 1776 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.1 He was the son of Noah Hodgkin II and Elizabeth Kimberly. He married Stata (Stella) Hale at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, before 1804.2,3 Seth Hodgkin Dea. appeared on the census of 1810 at Wallingford, New Haven County, CT, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Seth, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 to 44; 3 females under 10, 1 female 26 to 44.. He married Abigail Hubbell at Bangall, Dutchess County, NY, USA, on 11 April 1821. They were married by Rev Luman Birch.. Seth Hodgkin Dea. died on 11 February 1848 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA, at age 71.4 He was buried at New Vernon Cemtery, at Mamakating Park, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

The 1810 Census shows him in Wallington, New Haven Co., CT with one male child and three female children. Seth purchased land from Joshua Francis in 1803 and 1805. According to Audrey Carver, the following parcels of land were also purchased by Seth: 1806, Seth Hotchkin of Guilford bought 65 acres in North Bristol, CT. 1810, Seth sold 5 acres in North Bristol to Nodiah Norton. In 1817, Seth sold 22 acres in Guilford to Darius Coe; 1819, Thomas Norton got a Sheriff's judgment on Seth for a debt and Seth sold the North Bristol land to pay the debt. The 1820 census of Duchess Co., NY finds his family living next door to his brother Noah, with all of Seth's children living at home. Shortly after the marriage, the family moved to Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY and the 1830 census gives the family as Seth Hotchkiss, his wife, one male child and two female children. His son Francis is also found in Liberty at this census. The 1840 census of Liberty has Seth Hotchkins with his wife age 60 to 70, one female child and another female, age 60 to 70.
Audrey Carver furnished to Geoffrey Brown, for his Hotchkin book, bible records, with an obituary attached that gave Seth's death date as 11 February 1848. This obituary said that his age was 72 and that he was a Deacon of the Old School Baptist Church for many years. Seth's children are identified by the Wills of three individuals: William Mead Hotchkin's Will dated 13 January 1900; Zebulon Hotchkin's Will, Book 10, pg 394, Sullivan Co. Surrogate Records dated 16 May, 1888 in Patterson, NJ and executed 2 February 1891; and the Will of J. Francis Hotchkin, son of Zebulon, Sullivan Co. Surrogate Records, dated 23 May 1887.

Thomas Hodgkin Jr. Esq.1,2

M, (1677 - 24 April 1754)
Thomas Hodgkin Jr. Esq. was born in 1677 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA. Died in his 77th year according to Tombstone.3 He was the son of John Hodgkin and Mary Bishop. He married Abigail Parmelee at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, in 1708. Thomas Hodgkin Jr. Esq. died on 24 April 1754 at Madison, New Haven County, CT, USA. Morton Genealogy says that death was 18 Apr 1754. His Tombstone inscription in the Hammonssett Cemetery says "In Memory of WORSHIPFUL Thomas Hodgkin, Esquire, who died 24th April 1754 in His 77th Year"..4,5,6 He was buried at West Cemetery, at Madison, New Haven County, CT, USA.

Thomas bought a parcel of land containing 9 1/2 acres in Guilford on 10 March 1728/9. The Guilford Town Hall records contain the document called, "A Terrier of Lands belonging to Thomas Hodgkin in Guilford." Some of this document is unreadable in the copy that the Compiler made; but it lists many parcels belonging to Thomas. A list of Guilford Freemen was published on 17 September 1750 and Thomas was listed as Thomas Hodgkin Esq. along with his brother Joseph. Thomas' Will leaves real estate to his nephew Joseph, son of brother Joseph, and to Thomas, son of nephew Joseph, and to the first male child of his nephew Janna, if there should be such a child. He frees his Negro man and leaves him some property; he leaves his Sabbath day house to the two nephews jointly. (A Sabbath day house is a small home in the town where they could spend Saturday night in order to attend church Sunday morning.) A Capt. Thomas Hodgkin was appointed as Justice of the Peace, by the Connecticut State Assembly on 1 December 1744 and every year thereafter until 1753. There is no firm evidence that this is the correct Thomas.
