Abraham Hodgkin1

M, (16 July 1779 - 28 February 1842)
Abraham Hodgkin was born on 16 July 1779 at Norfolk, Litchfield County, CT, USA. Cemetery records give a year of 1779. Connecticut Birth Records say 1778.2,3,4 He was the son of Samuel Hodgkin and Jerusha Hubbard. He married Perthema Bement at Berkshire County, MA, USA, in 1805.1,4 Abraham Hodgkin appeared on the census of 1810 at Berkshire, Tioga County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Abm, 1 male under 10, 2 males 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 26.. He died on 28 February 1842 at Newark Valley, Tioga County, NY, USA, at age 62.5,6 He was buried at Hope Cemetery, at Newark Valley, Tioga County, NY, USA.7,8

Abraham's birth is listed in Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT records as son of Samuel and Jerusha and the twin of Hannah. The 1810 and 1820 census of Broome Co. NY finds him with a wife and two children, and the 1820 census gives the location as Berkshire, Broome Co; while the 1830 census finds him in Newark Valley, Tioga Co., NY.
W.B. Gay in his Historical Gazetteer of Tioga County, NY says that Abraham was born in Guilford, CT on 16 July 1779 and died on 28 February 1842 in Newark Valley, NY, and lived in a log house on the West side of the road opposite the site of the brick house since built by Col John B. Royce. He had already sold the land to Col Royce but continued for several years to dwell there. Gay also says that at a Newark Valley town meeting in 1825, Abraham was elected one of 6 fence viewers. The purchase of this land is recorded in the Broome Co., records as Book 4, pg 224 and Book 5, pg 120. Both of these records say that the property was located in Berkshire, which at that date was a part of Broome Co. and later became Tioga Co.
Abraham, his wife Partenia, son Marshall, Marshall's three wives and daughter Juliatte are all buried in the Hope Cemetery in the village of Newark Valley. The Compiler and his wife Cathy were on their 1993 summer tour of New York state gathering data in Tioga County when they saw a sign along Route 38, Newark Valley announcing the historic Bement Homestead. We stopped and introduced ourselves as decendants of Asa Bement's son-in-law and got a great reception as they were looking for additional information on the family.4

Ebenezer Hodgkin1,2

M, (20 June 1722 - 24 July 1794)
Ebenezer Hodgkin was born at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA, on 20 June 1722.3 He was the son of Joseph Hodgkin and Elizabeth Hill. He married Jerusha Johnson at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, on 15 November 1744.4,5 Ebenezer Hodgkin died on 24 July 1794 at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, at age 72.6 He was buried at Nut Plains Cemetery, at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, USA.7

Some compilers including this one have confused Ebenezer Hotchkiss, son of Samuel Hotckiss and Elizabeth Cleverly and Ebenezer Hotchkin. It is very likely that Solomon and Asael were sons of Ebenzer Hotchkiss and Elizabeth Cleverly.
Ebenezer Hotchkin and his wife Jerusha lived their entire lives in Guilford and were buried in the Guilford, Nut Plains Cemetery and his death date comes from his gravestone. The Guilford Vital Records, has an Ebenezer Hodgkin or Hodgkiss who died 23 November 1760. The Compiler has visited their graves and photographed the gravestones. Talcott claims another marriage to a Sarah (last name unknown); however, this is unlikely with Ebenezer and Jerusha being buried together. Ebenezer appears on a list of Freemen, dated 19 September 1749.8

Ebenezer Hodgkin Dea. was a Private, andserved in Coast Guards at Guilford, during the Revolutionary War. He served 138 days. He married Ruth Hubbard at Guilford, New Haven County, CT, on 16 January 1791.4 Ebenezer Hodgkin Dea. appeared on the census of 1820 at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Ebenezer, 1 male 16 to 18, 2 males 16 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45; 2 females 10 to 16, 1 female 26 to 45, 1 female 45 and up. 3 persons engaged in Commerce.. He died on 24 March 1833 at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, at age 74.5,6,7 He was buried at Northeast Cemetery, at Richmond, Berkshire County, MA, USA. Cemetery established 1778.8

Ebenezer and Ruth moved to Richmond, MA from Guilford about 1796, one of the earliest of any of the family to leave Connecticut. Berkshire Co., MA land records show a sale of Lot 6, Second Land Division in Lenox by Ebenezer Welch to Ebenezer Hotchkin of Guilford, dated 2 April 1796. Land records show him acquiring additional land in 1797 and then again in 1827.
His Will, Docket #5353, probated 7 May 1835 left furniture and 1/3 of his property to widow Ruth, the balance divided between children John, Jerusha, Frederic, Ebenezer J., and Maria. The Will, dated 16 March 1833, shows Jerusha and Maria as widows as of this date. His son John was appointed Executor of the estate. The probate documents give the residence of Ebenezer Jr. as Mississippi. Goshen, Mississippi is where Rev. Ebenezer J. started his missionary work with the Choctaw Indians. By the date of this probate, the name had been changed from Hodgkin or Hochkin to Hotchkin and all parties were referred to as Hotchkin.
Ebenezer is listed in Bernard Steiner's book, History of Guilford and Madison, CT as having served 138 days in the Coast Guard after having enlisted on 27 May 1780. This list calls him Private Ebenezer Hotchkin Jr.9

Eli Hodgkin

M, (6 July 1782 - 26 November 1858)
Discussion of Eli Hotchkin and his family
Eli Hodgkin was born on 6 July 1782 at Norfolk, Litchfield County, CT, USA.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Hodgkin and Jerusha Hubbard. Eli Hodgkin lived in 1806 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA. According to newspaper articles, Eli moved to Waterville this year. He married Elizabeth (Betsey) Drury before 1807.
Eli Hotchkin made school tax collector.3
Eli Hodgkin died on 26 November 1858 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, at age 76. Obituary Waterville Times 4 December 1858, died at age 77..4,5,6 He was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.

An attached newspaper article from the Waterville Times gives an interesting report on Eli and other early pioneers of Waterville.
The 1820 census of Adams, Jefferson Co., NY finds Eli with his wife, two sons and two daughters. At the 1830 census of Sangerfield, Oneida Co., NY he is with his wife, two daughters and one son, the oldest son is no longer with the family. The 1840 census finds him in Sangerfield, Oneida Co., NY. At the 1850 census of Watertown he is living with his son Benjamin F. Hotchkin, age 68, born in CT, next door to his other son, Josiah Bacon Hotchkin; but the 1850 Census of Sangerfield, Oneida Co., NY has Eli living with his son Mark, and gives his age as 64, and birth in MA.
His gravestone in the Waterville Cemetery, which the Compiler has viewed, gives his birth on 6 July 1782 and his death on 26 November 1858. A document called Land Owner of Oneida County dated 1814 shows Eli Hotchkin in Sangerfield. The NY Assessment Rolls (OCHS 70MSS.1/SAN.3) show him in Sangerfield, NY in 1825, 1827, 1829, 1830, 1832, 1833, 1834, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838, and 1839.
The "Annals and Recollections of Oneida County," by Pomroy Jones, 1851 says that Eli Hotchkin (Hotchkiss) or Pardon Keyes kept a tavern, now the dwelling house of Dr E.A. Munger; at the corner of Main and Union; where Josiah Bacon, Reuben Bacon, Isaac Terry, and John Williams Esq. met to choose the name of Waterville, in about 1808. Josiah Bacon's name was given to one of Eli's sons and Eli and Reuben Bacon were witnesses to the Will of Joseph Eastman of Marshall, Oneida Co., NY, and dated 28 May 1835.
Eli appears on the Oneida Co. Grantors list starting in 1809 when on 29 July Eli Hotchkin et al sold a property to Silvant Dyer, Liber 19, pg 238. On 12 December 1818 he and his wife Betsey sold to their son Benjamin Franklin, Liber 54 pg 239. Their son was referred to, as Franklin in this transaction and Franklin's address was Watertown, NY. On 2 November 1839, the records show a transfer to their son George W. Hotchkin, Liber 94, pg 143. Both parties had Waterville as an address.5,7,8

CT Deaths gives age at death as 89..4 She was buried in 1855 at Higganum Cemetery, at Higganum, Middlesex County, CT, USA.

Both Talcott and NEHGR mention Eunice, but Talcott calls 14 July 1765 her birthday, where NEHGR gives the date as her baptismal date. It is likely that Talcott is wrong as the date appears in the North Madison Congregational Church records.
