Henry Clay Hendrick MD

     Henry Clay Hendrick MD was born on 11 September 1827 at Guilford, Chenango County, NY, USA. He was the son of Leontes Hendrick and Zilpha Farnham. He married Elizabeth J. Mooney at NY, USA, on 12 October 1854. He married Marinda McGraw at NY on 2 September 1860.1 Henry Clay Hendrick MD was a Surgeon, andserved in 157th New York Regt Infantry, during the Civil War. He died on 5 May 1911 at McGraw, Cortland County, NY, USA, at age 83.2 He was buried at McGraw Rural Cemetery, at McGraw, Cortland County, NY, USA.

     He began teaching when about 15 years of age and taught 12 terms of district and select schools. He studied medicine at Ann Arbor, MI and graduated in 1853. He began the practice of medicine at Willett, Cortland Co, NY where he remained about 3 years. After marriage they moved to McGranville, NY where he still lived in 1906. On Aug 15 1862 he was commissioned as Surgeon of the 157th NY Inf serving until the close of the war. He was Brigade Surgeon on the staff of Brig Sen A Ames and Division Surgeon on the staff of Maj Gen Carl Schwg, and was chief medical officer at Hilton Head and Beanfort SC and at Jacksonville and Fernandina FL.. At the close of the war he was brevetted Lient. Col. for distinguished services. He has been almost continuously a member of the Board of Education, serving either as Secy or President. He was a member of the US Examining Board for Pensions from 1880 to 1896. He was at first a Baptist and then a Presbyterian and for more than 25 years was an elder in the Presbyterian church.1

He married Amy Reynolds at Berkshire, Franklin County, VT, USA, on 20 September 1838. Married by Rev J. M. Beamer.1 Hiram Thomas Hendrick appeared on the census of 1850 at Saybrook, Ashtabula County, OH, USA. The census lists the family as: Hiram Hendrick, 33, farmer, born VT; Amy, 27, born VT; Elias S., 9, born VT; Charles N., 7, born VT; Talma C., 5, born OH.. Hiram died on 13 December 1902 at Lone Tree Twp, Central City, Merrick County, NE, USA, at age 85.1 He was buried at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, at Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, OH, USA. Lot 552.

     He resided in or near Berkshire, Vt. until 1844, when he moved to Schuylers Falls, NY in 1845, then moved to Ashtabula, OH in 1866, and then to Hagar, Berrien Co., MI in 1887. After 1885, he retired and lived with his children, mostly with his son, Talma, where he died. He was a farmer, carpenter and Baptist. The census of 1900 found him living with his son and Daughter-in-law in Central City, NE and confirmed his birth and said that he was widowed, and that his father was born in VT and his mother in NH.

     He united with the Baptist Church in Hornellsville, NY of which his father was Pastor. He graduated from Cook Academy in 1876 and from Madison University in 1880.
     Welland learned the printers trade and followed that for 2 years. He then became Principal of the Academy at Greene, Chenango Co, NY remaining for 7 years. Then for 2 years he was Principal of the High Scool at Saratoga Springs, NY; in 1891 he became Professor of Mathamatics in the State Normal School at Cortland, NY. In 1893 he was appointed Conductor of Institutes by the Superintendent of Public Instruction of NY state, which position he held for several years. He is the author of a "History of the State of New York," which is a text book generally used in the state. He was a Democrat.2

He married Mary Polly Salls at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT, on 23 March 1841.1,2 James Parker Hendrick appeared on the census of 1850 at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT. The census lists the family as: Parker Hendrix, 31, farmer, born VT; Polly, 33, born VT; Louisa, 7, born VT; Hannah, 5, born VT; Elihu, 3, born VT Talma Hendrix, 76, farmer, born VT; Lydia, 73, born VT.. He married Elizabeth A. Brown at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT, on 13 October 1885. James died on 29 January 1893 at Enosburg, Franklin County, VT, at age 73. In another location Talma uses a date of 30 Jan, 1893. Died of pneumonia..1 He was buried at Enosburg Center Cemetery, at Enosburg Falls, Franklin County, VT, USA. Died at age 73-6-24.

     Talma C. Hendrick personal diary says that he and his wife lived on his father's farm. He was a member of the Vermont senate, a farmer, dairyman, Methodist and a Republican
Enosbury Center Cemetery records show a wife Polly, who died 15 Aug 1884 at age 66 yr, 5 mo, 24 days (calculated to birth 22 feb 1818.) If this is Elizabeth then Talma's records are in error.1

     Talma says that he sailed on the Great Lakes when young. In August 1865 he went onto a farm in Ellington, MI, where he made his home, but spent his summers at Rose Island, a summer resort on Saginaw Bay, and ran a pleasure boat, where he was known as Capt Hendrick. He was a Methodist and a Democrat.1

James Parker Hendrick passed away at his home at Orion on Dec. 22, 1923, at the age of 27 years, six months, three days. He was born in Ellington June 19, 1896. He was united in marriage to Lota Byington of Datona, Mich., in June 1915. He leaves to mourn his loss. a loving wife and two children, his father and mother, four brothers and three sisters besides a host of friends. Those who attended the funeral from here were Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Hendrick, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Cutler, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hendrick, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hendrick, Norman and Egbert Hendrick, John Neiman, Miss Lila Hendrick and Omar Bullock; also Mr. and Mrs. D. A. McIntyre of Detroit.
